America is neither. It is a continent.

The United States was never a democracy nor a plutocracy. It was organized as a republic.
Today, the federal government is no longer a republic. It is an oligarchy. The Constitution of the United States has been discarded by the Democrats. They do not recognize the constitutions of any State either.

Once the war economy ended, and it took a few years for all that spending and contracts to finally run out, the economy took a serious dip before returning to slower growth. That happened right around 1952.

What really created a huge middle class in the US was a combination of work ethic, decent education, and ownership by most people of stuff like their homes, land, and larger value stuff like automobiles. What kills off the middle class is high taxes, difficultly in acquiring tangible wealth that appreciates like a home or land, and government handouts that reduce the value of work. A crappy education system--like our current public education system--also hurts a rise in the Middle class.
