she should have just given him what he wanted

better than a firearm in a house with small children...if she could have reached it in time
Wrong. As I said previously, Its OK if you have a pistol for backup. Here's an example:

[Police Officer] Blevins, while on foot patrol, first saw [perp] Fortune at about 8 a.m. in the 1500 block of North Liberty Street, police said. Blevins suspected Fortune of possessing illegal drugs and tried to arrest him. Fortune then tried to run, and Blevins used his Taser, but Blevins kept going, police said.

Southern said that the Taser’s prongs may not have made solid contact with Fortune, and the resulting jolt may not have been strong enough to stop Fortune from running. The prongs also could have disconnected from Fortune’s body or one prong connected with Fortune’s body, but the other one didn’t, Southern said.

Because of that, “the Taser may not have strong enough to bring him down,” Southern said.

Blevens, 45, then chased Fortune into the woods behind a Citgo gas station at 1522 N. Liberty St., where the men struggled again. Fortune is accused of punching Blevins in his mouth and face, an arrest warrant states. Fortune then took Blevins’ Taser and used it on Blevins, police said.

Blevins was stunned on his neck, according to a warrant. Blevins then fired his handgun at Fortune, hitting him the leg. Fortune was treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for a minor injury, police said.

Good thing the cop had a gun.

I didn't say that, did I? thought so.

our older daughter installed the following to protect her and her daughter at home:

a video surveillance system with ir for at night
a safe room
a land line to be able call 911 and reach the local police department
a front door that could not be kicked in with attendant hardware for the frame
an alarm system with armed response
a double pane sliding glass door with burglar resistant lock to her backyard

why? because a known person in her housing complex tried to break in to her home and because neither she nor her daughter could identify the man (they could identify him by his voice), the police were helpless

A lot easier just to buy a gun and train how to use it effectively. That would protect her outside of the apartment as well.

My kids get Glocks and take a CCW class when they turn 21.

Well... I did suggest that, while 007 is explaining to my very buff, very upstanding, very accomplished son why he would call him a fat, incompetent thug, I might buy his kids some ice cream to occupy their time. He seems to think THAT was threatening. If I were him, I'd find the presence of a bright, very strong, very fit 6'3" 206 lb young man who is understandably upset at being insulted in that manner a lot more potentially threatening than a 63 year old retired guy buying his kids ice cream.
You said TAKE THEM FOR ICECREAM.
Which has a very specific meaning in some circles.

most women in urban areas cannot afford such high end luxuries for their homes

just the armed response would have been cheaper.....

Obviously, we are members of different circles. In the circles I am a member of, taking children for ice cream means just that. Does the mother of these children of yours know you hang out in circles where it means, apparently, something specific and very different?

Walter Mitty certainly has led a rich and storied life.
Oh dear, is that the best you can do?

I worked on bank at the castle hill unit at St Luke's hospital, Huddersfield for five years.
Bank is the UK term for per diem staff.
It was a second job whilst I served in the Dukes.
As we all know, outside of deployment or specified duties, the military is a part time job.
I have worked in a frozen dessert factory, a factory gutting faux fur bed liners for brothels in Hamburgs reeperbahn and in the district of Amsterdam, a doorman in a rave bar to a doorman in a gay club.
I've done it all and done it to the highest standards.
Keep talking, coward.
You stayed safe in your comfy boat with your big salary whilst I risked everything for a pittance and gained valuable experience of civvy life in side jobs.
Everything I have today is the result of my personal efforts.
What you have is a gift from the tax payer.
Hence your need to hurl abuse and threat.
Coward.
I've met more heroic labourers.
Thousands more in fact.
More valuable to society than a jumped up Rupert like you who lacked the skills to lead.
