I don’t mind the cold, either but prefer it between 25- 40, the below zero temps I have always hated.

Having to keep your car plugged in is a pain.

Was Chena Hot Springs a thing when you lived in Squarebanks? We went there one winter to shoot the Lights. Got up early one morning and hiked up the mountain to their aurora-viewing yurt. It was -22F when I left. Wore swimsuit under parka/clothes. Soaked in the hot springs upon my return. We all looked like fairy people from the Lord of the Rings -- the mist from the springs froze in our hair and on our eyebrows; the guys' bears were white. Very cool! (literally)

It was a pain! So were the heating bills.

I have been there, but we didn’t go in the hot springs.

One of the worst trip we ever made was to Circle, we camped and floated the Yukon, the mosquitos and black flies were so awful, I vowed never to go, again.

OMG. Thanks for the warning; husband unit has talked about doing that same thing. Funny how they don't seem to show that on the Alaska reality shows or travel videos. lol

Be prepared if you do! I’ve never experienced anything like it, and no, the travel guides don’t warn you!

Ha, that might dent up tourism a bit, eh? The biting flies and mosquitoes are pretty horrible here too, from June through the end of July or so. If you leave even a square inch of skin exposed w/o DEET you'll be scratching that sucker for days. A head net is a great thing to have when rummaging through the woods.

I was hiking yesterday & mosquitoes usually comes up & some of the hikers that have hiked way up north & in Maine said they thought those flies were worse than the mosquitoes... That is pretty bad

I think they are too. We get a lot of wind here so if you are out playing in the summer and there's a decent breeze, the mosquitoes can't land on you as well. The flies though -- I swear they come with grappling hooks. They leave purple marks where they bite you as well. The wildlife go back up in the mountains to escape them in the warm months.

Yea, I've seen some documentaries of Caribou moving from grazing to just standing on patches of snow to avoid them..
