I don't think any definitions of democracy require a chief executive elected by popular vote of the entire nation.

We are still a republic which basically means rule by representatives. Those representatives are not necessarily chosen by the citizens as our Constitution illustrates.

But our republic has more acquired more democratic aspects over the year as the public has achieved more influence over the government--popular vote of electors, popular vote of Senators, expansion of the electorate, influence over judicial selection through Senators....

Are you defining democracies as only direct/pure democracies? Are any current nations democracies?
