Surprise! Massachusetts pushes for spanking ban

Are you oblivious to history?
2 generations ago, damn near every kid was spanked or worse and school killings were unheard of. Kids were much more respectful.

They are not being taught violence, they are being taught justice. Youth crime is much higher in this generation where spanking is less frequent.

Really?

Or are you just pulling another damo?

No, he has a point, although I think he is addressing it the wrong way.

School violence is higher these days because students are never allowed to just beat the shit out of each other....in the past students could fight without getting dragged off to jail, and sometimes the principal would have the fighters finish what they started after school.

But today's society is so obsessed with protecting little Timmy from ever getting hurt that the necessary fighting (which gets the anger out of the system and allows the children to move on) never happens, so then this anger just continues to build inside a person until he shoots up his school (it doesn't help, either, that modern culture has decided that the gun is the ultimate solution to every problem).

"Necessary fighting"?

The mind of a conservative.

Except I'm not a fucking conservative.

Necessary fighting, yes. For thousands of years school boys got into fights...and nothing bad happened.

Is it so difficult to see that as soon as schools decided that fights were absolutely unacceptable, that is when school shootings started?

The children have no outlets for their anger, and are not taught how to handle anger.

Think about it--- have you ever gotten into a fight with someone, a sustained fight that no one broke up? About ten minutes later after you two have beat the shit out of each other, you are going to be buddies.

But in the modern school system that never happens.

So this is the republican rationale about Iraq ?
sheesh...

did gonzo post that?

Schools have eliminated the feeling of community. They are too big. Back when things were settled in the way Gonzo sugested is back when schools were smaller and the admin KNEW all the kids. Now the kids are treated like nameless inmates instead of community members.

No, you blind party-hack.

This is the rationale for allowing fighting in schools--- obviously you would break it up if it got too out of hand, but you shouldn't have cops arresting kids at school for getting into a fight here or there....that is how anger festers and results in violence.

I think this stuff contributes to it as well, but most being what someone (I think Cypress) pointed out earlier with an article....little or no parental involvement. Not a good thing.

I love the days when the principal would bring the boxing gloves out during lunch period and allow the bullies to go at it. We had great fun with that. Nowadays we'd pay for it with a great time in court. Sad really.

That is a problem, too.

it's the rationale of the modern world. Thesis - Antithesis - Synthesis. It's the basic human pattern of life which elites exploit to make their "solutions" seem reasonable.

Well, clearly I am not excusing the parents. In almost every instance of school violence the parents would have been able to prevent the shooting had they paid attention to their children.

However, I agree that it is sad that people aren't allowed to settle a fight anymore....I think a large amount of the frustration in our society and our tendency to just snap and kill people is due to the fact that conflict remains so unresolved in this day and age.

Absolutely amazing. I have to agree with desh. I will mark this on my calendar. ;)

Seriously, she's right. Absolutely right. No metal detectors here, no extreme violence to speak of unless a couple of girls decide to duke it out over a guy. And when a couple of guys decides to go at it I can take my time walking to them to break it up because there is minute fear of either one of them brandishing a weapon.

The people who attacked Columbine were more like terrorists than people who had been "made fun of" and were getting back. The shootings since there were all emo copycats based on the glorified version of the story.
