Teacher's neck broken over iPod...

So basically, everyone on this thread actually believes that this teacher got their neck broken because they refused to defend themselves because "corporal punishment" is not allowed? lol

He/she got their neck broke because the kid could take him, or surprised them. Anyone whom is attacked has the right to defend themselves. And the kid broke the teacher's neck because somewhere along the line, this kid learned violence. You want something? Hit. Don't like something? Hit.

And not one suggestion on this thread would ever change that.

Well, my suggestion is to kick kids like that out all together and make the parents responsible for getting them educated. How are they supposed to make someone learn or follow the rules when they are that defiant or show that they are willfully unwilling to be in school? Its not nice and ideally we'd like to educate everyone, but the resources they suck away from other chilren isn't fair to them.

I'm not against corporate punishment.

A violent 14 year old has violent parents, you can bet on that. And kicking him or her out of school and saying that his parents are responsible for him, is only going to ensure they continue to do what they have been doing, which is nothing. And it will ensure also, that the kid who is already violent, gets no education. So what kind of adult is that going to make?

I don't know the solution to bad parenting, but I don't think that more violence and/or kicking them out of school is the answer.

They should be moved to a school designed for such. Teachers trained, punishment system created around such. Keeping them in the same schools as the well-behaved simply creates a situation where it is difficult for anybody to get the proper educational background.

Its a not a pretty solution, I know, but if they have shown that they are willing to with the school to the point where they violently rebel against faculty what do you do?

Well, I just went to CNN and listened to the report. There is a lot going on there. You have 14 year old school kids they claim are "not afraid of anything or anyone".

You can beat these kids, but they've already been beaten, that's why they're not afraid. You can remove them from the school and put them into some sort of, what will end up being, detention center, and they will be criminals when they are adults. There's no easy answer to this, because these are big, giant, societal problems. Poverty, I'm guessing either no dad in the pic, or a violent dad in the pic, when there is no dad in the pic, a succession of violent step-fathers, mother working 2-3 jobs, violent mother, and god knows what else.

I suppose juvie would work as well. I just wouldn't keep them anywhere near kids that just want to learn and get a HS Diploma.

Exactly...

Ridiculous. Almost all Martial Arts training teach a discipline that would not be found within those who have never taken such training.

More good kids should be taught martial arts...I taught my GD martial arts...not the type found in 'DOJOS' mind ya but those I learned in the military and Law Enforcement...to make a story short in her sophmore year(she is in her junior year now) she had problems with a group of girls hell bent on making her life miserable..She warned them several times and went to the principle with her complaint...he did nothing...told her to try to get along...she said she did but they were persistent in cornering her and threatening her...so on the final day that broke the proverbial camels back one of the girls attacked her...well this idiot went to the hospital...the Sheriffs Department investigated and prosecuted the 4 girls including the one who needed medical treatment...then took the GD under wing...she is the 'President' of the SO explorer unit and a SO cadet...they are giving her a scholarship for LE training and she will work as a intern with pay in her Senior year! The moral of the story is defend yourself... bullies will go away!

Alaskan boot camp then? If they are violently defiant to getting an education, I don't think keeping them around is going to thwart them from being a criminal. Its not fair to the other kids that want to learn and do well on standardized tests and go to college. Or even the kids in reform school that are trying to better themselves to get back into traditional classrooms. All you're doing is spreading the poison. Its better to isolate them and get rid of them so that the other students have a better chance.

LOL, that happened to me in 8th grade. I used to get made fun of on the bus non stop for the first two years of middle school. In 8th grade I took names and kicked a$. Till this day one of the guys I beat up is still afraid of me. :o

From a teacher's standpoint, the bad kids have to go. There is no way you can create an environment conducive to learning if there is always the fear of an eruption or the room is in disruption.

I won't even allow a kid to talk while I am lecturing (There is no way they are going to be using an ipod or cell phone) unless they raise their hand and I acknowledge them. If they do talk they are sent out of the room. First time = swats, Second time = suspension.

Well, I wouldn't suspend someone for talking, but I do know a lot of those underperforming schools have children that are smart and have high aptitudes to learn, however, their environment is not conducive to learning. That's why my cousin in DC homeschooled her kids and a lot of other inner city parents send their children to private school. And that's really not fair to them.

This is why I think we need to rethink our entire school system. I know people don't like this idea, but if teachers are going to continue to have little to no disiplinary powers over the kids, yet some how be responsible for them, we should think about being able to kick kids out of the public school system indefinitely and let their parents be responsible for their education.

Starting to see now why we want to homeschool? :)

If you lived in DC, yes, but for some reason, I think the neighborhood you live in has a much better school system than DC. Also, if the schools weren't filled up with trash and they could kick dangerous kids like this out then there really wouldn't be a need.

It's another topic for another time -- I haven't time or energy to hijack anything today -- but personally, I'm deeply distrustful of homeschooling. Not that a lot of homeschooled kids aren't doing very well, but the lack of accountability is disturbing.

This may seem strange given my stated disinterest in cultural homogeneity but I do believe that a lot of parents who take up homeschooling do so for very bad reasons.

Well, I always visualize homeschoolers like alec from our old board. WTF right does that woman have to be homeschooling anybody? A high school dropout who can't even compile a coherent post?

And the fact that someone like that can homeschool, turns me off to it right away. Obviously they have absolutely no standards.

One fact of the matter on homeschooling. Homeschooling does cover up child abuse of various types....
Darn brats going to school and telling on AHZ for porkin em anyway !
