My big advice is to live with no regrets.Yup!
At age 88, I don't kid myself. The expression, "Today you are one day closer to death than you were yesterday" has emphasized meaning.
Gonna happen...and gonna happen relatively soon.
As a teenager, I witnessed my grandfather and grand aunt reconcile after 40+ years over a tiff about the divorce of my grandfather and grandmother when my mom was a child.
Under similar circumstances I saw my brother in a spat with my dad and refused to talk with him at all or even acknowledge our half-brother and half-sister 20 years later. His choice, but out of concern for him, I advised him to have no regrets because "standing over someone's grave is the wrong fucking time to have regrets".
He did. Although he still didn't have much to say to my dad, he and my half-brother became good friends and had a few fly fishing trips together. We are all scattered across the country so get-togethers often had to be planned.
