Trump is RIGHT about Regaining the Panama Canal

This is true, but you are lying by omission. You are leaving out key details.

Yes, by military force, if necessary. Panamá has breached the treaty many times and only one breach is a valid claim by which the canal reverts back to the US.

Look, Trump doesn't want the canal; Trump wants the tolls lowered. The canal is merely leverage. I think it's going to happen.
totalitarians are bad at deal making.

they don't understand anything about trump.

The Panama Canal is located wholly within the nation of Panama. The US turned it over to Panama. Unless Panama agrees, the US cannot take over the canal.

Two extant treaties were ratified by the U.S. Senate and were signed on September 7, 1977, by President Jimmy Carter on behalf of the United States and by by Omar Torrijos, then the leader of Panama.

The aptly named Permanent Neutrality Treaty guarantees the permanent neutrality of the Panama Canal.

It provides that the canal shall remain secure and open to peaceful transit by vessels from all nations under terms of entire equality, with no discrimination in conditions or charges of transit.
  • It explicitly allows the United States to use military force if necessary to defend the neutrality of the canal, ensuring perpetual U.S. usage rights.
  • The treaty has no termination date, meaning continues indefinitely. In perpetuity.
If our national interests compels us to act, we can.

Panama's military is manifestly unequal to ours.

Might makes right. Right?

I sense that Bear Bryant might've approved.

Roll, Tide!

Yes, we can use military force to defend the neutrality of the canal.

Unless Panama stops being neutral, it is still a moot point.

We will not use our military to take the canal under US control.

Bear Bryant? Really? What a stupid response.

We built the Panama Canal, and then basically gave it to Panama. It is a done deal. They own it.

Unless you are advocating using military force, there is no way the canal comes back to ownership by the US.
Military force is exactly what they are playing with.

OTOH, Trump is a blowhard. He'll bitch and bluster about something like building a wall and having Mexico pay for it, then move on to something else and blame the Democrats for any problems or criticisms.

You are not the arbiter of what can be accomplished, why, nor how. Are you?

Roll, Tide!

Yes, Bear Bryant.

I sense that I am very close to appreciating his legacy for some reason.

Roll, Tide!

His legacy is that of a college football coach and all that comes with that.

His legacy is not international politics or the rights of sovereign nations.

Roll, Tide!

No I am not. But to think that the US would take the Panama Canal using military force, when the canal is being operated in a neutral fashion, is simply laughable.

A great man, by the accounts I've read. I'm confident that if he could, he might look favorably upon my advocacy. Alas, we can never know, can we?

Roll, Tide!

Do you suppose your opinion will be sought by the President, the Congress, the Department of State or the Joint Chiefs of staff?

No we can't.

And yes, he was a great man. He was one of the greatest college football coaches in history. He turned boys into men.

I met him. I was fortunate enough to talk with him several times. He was focused on football and athletics.
