District Judge Joel Tingey on Monday sentenced an Ammon man to five years of probation for molesting a 13-year-old girl.

Joshua David Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty Feb. 29 to felony injury to a child. The charge was reduced from lewd conduct with a child younger than 16, pursuant to a plea agreement.

Tingey suspended a two- to five-year prison term and placed Johnson on probation. If Johnson is unsuccesful on his probation Tingey could impose the suspended prison term.

Tingey ordered Johnson to complete sex offender treatment and gain full-time employment or schooling as a term of his probation. Johnson will not be added to the sex offender registry because the charge was reduced. Johnson also is required to have no avoidable contact with underage females.

Court records show the now 14-year-old victim reported the molestation to Idaho Department of Health and Welfare employees, who reported it to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office. The victim told investigators she met Johnson over Facebook and the two traded nude photos. Johnson told investigators he thought the victim was 17 years old.

A man was bound over to Marion Circuit Court on charges of child molestation and sodomy involving a minor after two witnesses took the stand.

Andrew D. Crook, 32, of Hannibal, appeared in person with defense attorney Joseph G. Whitener on Monday, April 11.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rapp and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Gareth Cooksey represented the state. Two witnesses answered questions from Rapp and Whitener.

A 12-year-old boy testified that his father and Crook were friends and had gone to school together. He said he visited Crook's home to play with his son and daughter. The boy told Rapp that Crook touched his genitals while he was in the home, and he identified the defendant in court.

Next, Deanna Lange took the stand. Lange told Rapp she witnessed Crook molesting and sodomizing his daughter, who was eight or nine years old at the time.

A missing Florida priest sparked a multi-state manhunt that netted an ex-con who crashed the clergyman’s Corolla during a high-speed chase that ended in South Carolina.

Now Steven Murray, 28, is in jail cracking wise after surrendering. “Smile for the camera,” he snickered later in Aiken County court and jabbing at police, “Y’all got some slow dogs.”

St. Johns County Sheriff’s are more interested in hearing Murray explain what happened to Father Rene Robert, missing since Sunday.

“Father Robert was assisting Mr. Murray in some capacity,” St. Johns County Sheriff’s Commander Chuck Mulligan said, citing the priest’s counsel to the Jacksonville-based man who whose rap sheet includes weapons possession and larceny. (Robert’s name is pronounced ROW-bear.)

“They met through a female individual who was released from our local jail and Father Robert was also ministering her,” Mulligan said. “She made the introduction to Mr. Murray and he was helping this individual.”

It’s unclear how long Fr. Robert was ministering the Murray, a recidivist thief.

“As a Franciscan like Pope Francis, he reaches out to the poor and most in need and offers care for animals in our community,” Kathy Bagg, St. Augustine Diocese spokeswoman said. “He has a huge heart. He gains strength and spirit from the people he serves.”

Authorities think Robert’s life is in danger.

“We believe foul play his involved,” Mulligan said. “Something is not right with this storyline. We don’t believe he disappeared on his own.”

Since 1980, Father Robert has served the St. Augustine Diocese and been a force for good throughout northern Florida by making tireless visits at hospital bedsides, funerals, and jail cells.

Police may have found more remains of a mother of three who was killed and dismembered after going on a date.

The remains were discovered in a container in the Seattle area near where body parts, including a head, were dumped in a recycling bin nearly a week ago.

Police at the scene would not immediately confirm if the remains were those of Ingrid Lyne but said they were investigating a “possible connection.”

John Charlton, 37, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of the 40-year-old nurse.

Charlton told police he was so drunk the night he’s accused of killing Lyne that he slept on a sidewalk. Police say after the two attended a Mariners game Friday and then went to a bar, Charlton apparently killed the woman and cut up her body in her own bathroom. Then he dumped her body parts in a recycling bin in Seattle, using her car to transport her remains.

A homeowner found the remains.

Charlton is in jail on $2 million bail and faces at least 28 years in prison if convicted.

Charlton's public defender said no forensic evidence links Charlton to the crime.

Charlton has a criminal history and his parents took out a restraining order against him in 2006.

Murderer caught after 32 years on the lam
frederick_barrett.jpg

DENVER — Officers posing as forest rangers surprised a 60-year-old escapee from Florida at a remote Colorado cabin on Wednesday, bringing a sudden end to his 32 years on the lam after a murder conviction in the 1970s.

Frederick Barrett was arrested outside a makeshift but tidy cabin near Montrose, about 200 miles southwest of Denver, when the officers said they wanted to discuss fire danger, the U.S. Marshals Service said. When they saw a tattoo on his hand that matched one that Barrett was known to have, they told him he was under arrest.

"His whole face, every expression dropped out of his face," said Charlie Ahmad of the Marshals Service, recounting what the arresting officers told him.

Ahmad, the enforcement supervisor for the Marshals Service in Colorado, led the arrest team of marshals, Montrose County deputies and U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officers. Ahmad and some of the team surreptitiously surrounded the cabin before other officers collared Barrett.

Barrett was convicted of murder in the 1971 death of Carl Ardolino in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Ardolino had picked up Barrett and another man who were hitchhiking, said Ron Lindbak, a deputy U.S. marshal in Florida. Ardolino was choked and beaten until he was unconscious and then held underwater in a ditch until he died.

Barrett escaped from Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Fla., in August 1979 by climbing three fences at night during a power failure. Barrett had escaped and been captured twice before that, Lindbak said.

The Montrose Daily Press reported Barrett had lived in Montrose County since 1994.

The arrest took months of planning, but authorities didn't say how they tracked Barrett to Colorado. Barrett had been using the alias "Neil Meltzer," Florida authorities said. Barrett wouldn't say how he had supported himself, Ahmad said.

Barrett's cabin was two stories and was connected to a camper, Ahmad said, with plywood floors, a wood-burning stove and a generator.

"It was kept very clean, it was meticulously clean," Ahmad said.

Barrett was alone when arrested but there was evidence of a second person "coming and going," Ahmad said.

Authorities aren't looking for anyone else, he said.

"We rarely prosecute those (aiding and abetting cases), and when we do, we rarely win," he said.

The cabin was on a dirt road about an hour's drive west of Montrose, a town of about 18,000. In the wintertime, it's accessible only by snowshoe or snowmobile.

The cabin is on private land bordered by the Uncompahgre National Forest, and a campsite near the lot is popular with hunters, Ahmad said. He said he didn't know who owned the land.

Barrett is being held at the Montrose County jail awaiting extradition to Florida.

Officers saw several firearms and what appeared to be a small marijuana growing operation, and local authorities were seeking a state search warrant for the property, the Marshals Service said.

Police are searching for two brothers, who are believed to be armed and dangerous, in connection with the killings of a Washington State couple, police said Sunday.

John Blaine Reed, 53, and Tony Clyde Reed, 49, are wanted for the disappearance and deaths of married couple Patrick Shunn, 45, and Monique Patenaude, 46, according to the Seattle Times.

The couple were reported missing last Tuesday from their ranch in Arlington, police said. Officers found their empty cars near an embankment in a remote forest two days later. Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary said there is surveillance footage “tying the Reed brothers to the disposal” of the cars.

Police have not found Shunn or Patenaude’s bodies, but concluded from evidence in the cars and in their house they were “victims of homicidal violence.”

Rape_Charge_Livestreaming-54058.jpg

An Ohio teenager accused of livestreaming the rape of her 17-year-old friend has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges.

Marina Lonina, 18, a student at New Albany High School, outside Columbus, was "attempting to record the assault as evidence", her attorney, Sam Shamansky, said.

“She’s in the habit of filming everything with this app called Periscope,” Shamansky acknowledged.

A police report accused Gates of holding the victim down using the weight of his body while assaulting her.

The report also says teenager can be heard screaming, “No, it hurts so much,” “Please stop” and “Please, no” multiple times.

A judge set Lonina’s bond at $125,000.

Her co-defendant, Raymond Gates, 29, also pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $300,000.

The pair has been charged with rape, kidnapping, sexual battery and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor. If convicted, each faces up to 40 years in prison.

Lonina also was charged with the illegal use of a minor in a nudity-oriented material or performance.

Police say they’re not sure 20-year-old Austin Craley is even in the area anymore, but they’re following up as many leads as possible.

Residents of an apartment complex where some of the search has focused say it’s been a tense few days since this search started.

There's no lack of evidence against Rusty Barnhart regarding a sexual assault.

DNA ties him to the crime, and an arrest affidavit quotes him as admitting that he had sex with a woman under very similar circumstances around that time after "Junior" Trevino, who's also charged in the case, claimed that the victim "wanted it."

Nonetheless, neither Barnhart nor Trevino is being charged with sexual assault, because the statute of limitations for this offense has expired — and that would be true even if a current piece of Colorado legislation extending these limits becomes law.

Instead, the men face kidnapping charges that could net a sentence as small as four years behind bars.

Barnhart is a registered sex offender in Texas with a lengthy record documented pictorially by mug shots accessible online.

A married Oregon pet shop worker went through some monkey business to pay for a prostitute.

In some primitive thinking, Nathan Allen McClain, a Zany Zoo employee, stole about $7,000 from the store’s Girl Scout cookies sales, which he used to pay a prostitute — then tipped her with a Galago primate, Eugene police said.

Abbie McClain, the suspect’s wife and owner of the pet store, originally believed that a burglar had broken in and stolen the monkey.
