On a Saturday evening in late May, emergency dispatchers in West Virginia received a call about a sick baby.

When responders arrived on the scene, however, they learned that the caller didn’t have custody of the child, who had “apparently been abandoned” at the house, according to a Fayette County Sheriff’s Department news release.

That’s when deputies were sent out to the home, too.

Investigators found that earlier in the day, a couple brought the 3-month-old baby to the home, the release states. And then that couple tried to sell the infant for $500 to $1,000, according to witness accounts.

“Law enforcement officers frequently deal with some pretty strange situations,” Sheriff Steve Kessler said in the release. “A situation like this is really out of the ordinary though.”

A woman behind the wheel of a car that plummeted 200 feet off a Maui cliff, killing her twin sister in the passenger seat, was charged with second-degree murder.

Alexandria Duval, aka Alison (or Allison in some reports) Dadow, intentionally set out to take the life of her sibling, Anastasia Duval, aka Ann Dadow, prosecutors assert after witnesses allegedly saw the 37-year-old women arguing, AP wrote. Witnesses say they then saw the Ford Explorer turn and accelerate off the cliff.

Anastasia Duval died at the scene while Alexandria Duval was rushed to the hospital, AP noted.

Able to walk but with her arm in a sling, Alexandria Duval appeared in court Monday to face charges, KHON2 reported.

Court documents reveal witness accounts saying “the passenger was pulling at the driver’s hair and the steering wheel,” the station noted. Investigators allege that the vehicle showed no signs of braking during the May 29 incident on the Hana Highway.

The twins once co-owned a yoga franchise under their Dadow name in Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and were “known for their once glamorous lifestyle,” the Palm Beach Post wrote.

Alexandria Duval was arrested after prosecutors say she attempted to fly to the mainland. According to KHON2, her attorney said in court she was merely attempting to return home for her sister’s funeral.

As for the women’s aliases, attorney Todd Eddins reportedly said, “People have reasons for having a different name.”

Jacob Michael Talifaferro, of the 800 block of East Cypress Street, called 911 early Monday and told the dispatcher he had killed his mother, Palmyra police and county detectives say.

Lorrie Ann Demko was stabbed in the chest and then strangled with a rope, said Patrolman Jared Henry and Detective Matthew Brindley in court documents.

Taliaferro said he watched TV for a while, took a shower and then called 911.

Chilling surveillance video shows a mother fighting off a man who Citrus County deputies say was trying to kidnap her daughter.

Investigators say around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Craig Bonello, 30, grabbed a 13-year-old girl, who was shopping with her mother, and dragged her down the aisles of a Dollar General Store. After a short struggle with the girl's mother, Bonello ran for the parking lot.

Investigators said he may have gotten away, if it weren't if it weren't for off-duty Deputy Jonathan Behnen, who happened to be outside of the store.

Behnen blocked Bonello’s car as he tried to flee and arrested him.

59-year-old James Donald Halsell Jr., a NASA veteran who'd flown five space shuttle missions, struck the car half-sisters Niomi James, 11, and Jayla Parler, 13, were riding in.

On Tuesday, the former astronaut was charged with two counts of murder.

According to the criminal code of Alabama, one can be charged for murder if "Under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to human life, he or she recklessly engages in conduct which creates a grave risk of death to a person other than himself or herself, and thereby causes the death of another person."

A statement from a spokesperson for Alabama state troopers, said alcohol and speed may be factors in the crash.

That evening, while the family of the dead girls drove across state lines, Halsell was in his motel room, drinking wine.

According to the Houston Chronicle, he told police he'd had three glasses, but his memory appears to be unreliable — Halsell said he doesn't remember leaving the motel room.

Later, police would find an entire empty wine bottle — which holds roughly six glasses of wine — and an empty 10-pack of sleeping pills in the room.

Juan Ibarra was the first to come upon the wreck while on his way to an early shift working construction. The scene was chaos.

While Ibarra attempted to help the family in the wake of the crash, Halsell approached him, "said nothing" and attempted to hop into the driver's seat of Ibarra's stopped pickup truck.

"When I saw that, I ran and took the keys and locked my truck," Ibarra said. "I pushed him and said, 'Stay away from my truck.'"

Halsell wandered away from the crash, disappearing into the darkness.

When he was later found and arrested, his "speech was slurred, eyes were dilated, clothes disheveled and he was unstable on his feet and smelled of alcohol," according to the deposition. But the former astronaut has no memory of any of it.

A mom was arrested after she allegedly left her child with a random person she met on Craigslist.

According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, a babysitter responded to a Craigslist ad from 24-year-old Kelsey McMurtry, who was looking for childcare.

However, immediately upon arriving McMurtry reportedly unloaded her child and left.

The infant was said to be soaked in urine and it appeared she hadn't been bathed in days.

McMurtry didn't pick up after repeated phone calls were made, so the caregiver called police.

She was eventually arrested on Broadway that night for public intoxication.

A Florida woman was charged Wednesday with cruelly stringing along a Minnesota couple who planned to adopt her baby — for seven months after she miscarried.

"It's a girl," Carrie Cutler, 31, told the couple in a text message three weeks after her pregnancy ended.

After the miscarriage last August, Cutler took more than $13,000 from Todd and Alyssa Holmstrom to cover her rent, food and medical expenses, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

after collecting thousands of dollars from the Holmstroms, Cutler sent them and the adoption agency another message that said, "The baby is fine" and told them she was scheduled to give birth by C-section in March.

But on the due date, Cutler told the couple the delivery had been postponed. When the Holmstroms did travel to Tampa for the expected birth and met with Cutler for the first time, she kept up the fraud, police said.

"Talk about wreaking havoc with someone's emotions — she met with them in a restaurant and points to her stomach and says, 'Hey, did you see the baby kick?'" Gualtieri said.

Police said that because Cutler was heavyset, the couple could not tell that she was not pregnant. A few days later, they returned home after Cutler told them the doctors miscalculated how far along she was and gave her a delivery date of six weeks later.

The adoption agency that matched up Cutler and the Holmstroms then contacted the hospital and learned that Cutler had miscarried months earlier.

After a three-month investigation, police arrested Cutler at a Budget Inn in Tampa on Wednesday morning and charged her with adoption fraud.

"She denied it, said she didn't know she miscarried — which is nonsense," Gualtieri said.

Cutler, who has previous arrests for passing bad checks, does not yet have an attorney. Gualtieri said she is pregnant again.

A Valdese man was handed down a 21-year prison sentence today for producing child pornography.

Jesse Brison Ollis, aka “Jesse Lequire,” 27, of Valdese, also will serve a lifetime of supervised release and have to register as a sex offender upon completion of his prison term. The sentence was issued by U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger, announced Jill Westmoreland Rose, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Law enforcement received information from Australian authorities that an Australian 14-year-old female (victim one) had been engaging in sexually explicit communications over the internet with an individual later identified as Ollis, according to today’s sentencing hearing and filed court documents. Victim one informed law enforcement that she had met Ollis online when she was 12 years old and she believed him to be 17 years old, according to court documents.

A forensic examination of electronic devices seized from Ollis’ residence revealed that Ollis had been communicating with victim one online and had “blogged,” or posted, child pornography images on the internet.

Further forensic investigation revealed that Ollis had additional sexually explicit images and videos of a second minor female (victim two). Court records indicate that law enforcement identified victim two as a minor living in western North Carolina who Ollis had befriended.

“Ollis is every parent’s worst nightmare coming to life,” said U.S. Attorney Rose. “He targeted impressionable young children and used the internet in the worst possible way: to share sexually explicit images of victimized underage girls.

A northwestern man has been charged with abusive sexual contact after he allegedly groped an unaccompanied teen aboard an American Airlines flight.

Chad Cameron Camp, 26, was arrested after the incident on a flight from Dallas to Portland on Wednesday night, according to a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court.

A flight attendant had advised Camp that other seats were available, but he sat in the middle one next to the 13-year-old girl, the complaint said.

Camp allegedly began making small talk with the child in the seat next to him.

He leaned against the teen, nudged her, touched her with his elbow and placed his hands on her knee and upper thigh, according to the complaint.

A flight attendant saw Camp's hand near the girl's crotch. She described seeing a tear coming down the girl's cheek and ordered Camp to change seats.

She moved the girl up a number of rows, ordered Camp farther back on the aircraft and notified the captain, the complaint said.

The captain told police, and the suspect was arrested by police and FBI agents when the plane landed.

The man accused of hitting nine bicyclists with his truck, killing five people, faces new charges -- five counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death.

Charles Pickett Jr. was under the influence of a drug, but Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Getting did not detail which drug nor the legality of the substance. Getting said he could not elaborate on "how high" Pickett was when he allegedly struck the nine bicyclists with his truck Tuesday, June 7, on a roadway just north of Kalamazoo.

The suspect already has been charged with five counts of second degree murder and four counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment.

A North Texas Boy Scouts of America troop leader and American Airlines executive has pleaded guilty to a federal interstate child-sex charge.

Prosecutors have agreed to recommend a 10-year prison term after a guilty plea by Ray Howland.

Howland was arrested near Pittsburgh International Airport by an undercover agent who posed as a woman with a 10-year-old daughter.

Howland used an iPad and a cellphone to send explicit messages after posting online that he was “looking for a family or a couple of girls” for sex while in town on business.

SHE ATTENDED A CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

On the morning of April 22, 2015, one sorority sister after another opened the bathroom door and recoiled in disgust.

The toilet at Muskingum University’s Delta Gamma Theta house was splattered with blood.

Suspecting that it was a feminine hygiene issue, the sorority’s house manager texted everyone living in the building that whoever was responsible needed to come clean up her mess.

“It looks like a murder scene,” the manager wrote.

She had no idea how right she was.

That night, four Deltas went out for ice cream in the small college town of New Concord, Ohio. Instead of school, however, all they could talk about was Emile Weaver. The 20-year-old had put on weight recently and begun to act strangely, giving rise to rumors among her sorority sisters that Weaver was secretly pregnant.

Now there was the blood in the bathroom.

One of the Deltas had a horrible hunch.

She and a sorority sister went outside to the house’s garbage bin. On the ground, they found a trash bag.

They tore a hole.

“We kept shaking the bag,” Madison Bates testified in court, according to the Zanesville Times Recorder. “And I saw a baby’s foot.”

That shocking discovery would uncover an even more startling crime.

Weaver was eventually arrested. According to prosecutors, she had hidden her pregnancy for nine months, all the while desperately trying to kill the baby she didn’t want. She drank alcohol, smoked marijuana and took scores of labor-inducing supplements.

She even played dodgeball.

When the baby somehow survived, Weaver took a more direct approach, cutting the umbilical cord herself before putting the newborn in a plastic bag, where the child suffocated to death, prosecutors said.

“No more baby,” she texted the man she thought was the father. “Taken care of.”

In May, an Ohio jury found Weaver guilty of aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, according to the Associated Press.

On Monday, she was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The stiff sentence was also surprising, however, as it stood in sharp contrast to another, remarkably similar case from the same school.

In 2002, Muskingum student Jennifer “Nikki” Bryant wrapped her newborn in a blanket and put the baby in a trash can, where the child died. Bryant pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, child endangering and abuse of a corpse. She was sentenced to three years in prison but only served seven months.

A 19-year-old Long Island baby sitter is facing charges after police say she was intoxicated while driving with four children in her car.

Suffolk County police say a good Samaritan called them Thursday afternoon to report an intoxicated woman who was unable to find her car in a lot near a beach in the town of Mount Sinai. Police say once the woman found her car, she tried to drive away with four boys aged 4 to 11 inside, but the good Samaritan used her own vehicle to block the woman until police arrived.

Sabrina Macri, of Sound Beach, New York, is charged with DWI, child endangerment, possession of a controlled substance and other counts.
