What has the right wing become.

Then you know from where I speak.

It may offend your conservative leanings but if you get a chance there is an outdoor cafe on the west side of the Student Union area next to the book co-op. Best coffee on campus and a serene un-college like atmosphere.

I grew up in Oakland and live in San Francisco. If liberal institutions offended me I would not have survived this long. Realistically it's been awhile since I've been to SD but I appreciate the recommendation.

I was a long time Republican, registered and voted almost 100% for the "R" after the name. But starting with Reagan, I started to drift away. By the time Bush 41 came along, I wasn't voting R for prez, but still voting R for state and local offices. But over time, as they became so focused on telling me what my religious beliefs, my social beliefs, what my moving away from the average person to the rich, at least in deed if not word, I finally registered as Independent (non-declared in CA). I did not vote for any Dem contender for Prez until 2008.

Now, I can't see ever going back to being a R. They are only a party of the rich and they only seek raw unbridled power. There is no compassion, and no desire to fix problems. Just to hate and demean, and turn us into an autocratic state. Their cult leader has taken them over so that the leadership is now subservient to the Donald.

I spent 2012 - 15 in the Bay Area. Nothing beats San Francisco in the late afternoon with the fog beginning to roll in.

Too bad you haven't been down Diego way. I am going back over Easter. Best place in the world as far as I am concerned. San Francisco and La Maddelena, Italy a close a second.

So you saw the price increases during your time here. The medium home price today in SF is $1.7. San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are both over $1m. (not that SD is cheap, it isn't, but not as bad as up here I believe). Amazing place but a lot of angst with the cost of living.

Agreed but there is little in the way solution. I cannot afford to live in SD. I sure is shit couldn't afford to live on the Peninsula up there. Not really sure there is any solution except to move out to bedroom communities like me.

“Since the 1970s CA has added 19 million people but only 6.2 million homes. This means that over a 40-year period the state added only 325 homes for every 1000 additional people." Any solution to homelessness & high rents that doesn’t add supply will fail.

Crazy. I bought my condo in SF in 2004. No way I could afford it today. (I could barely afford it back then) California is amazing but we have a serious cost of living situation on our hands.

Interesting. I will have to check that out. I still bitch about all the new housing construction eyesore. I guess I will have take a second gander.

Are you familiar with Scott Weiner's (progressive state senator from SF) proposed bill SB 827 which would require cities to allow more density near transit? Would be a game changer if it passes but it has some passionate critics

I am not sure returning to the slumhouses of the days of yore is the right way to go. I profess much ignorance on this subject and will have demur until I educate myself.

The argument is that it's about "smart growth" and more people living near public transportation will mean less cars on the road and less suburban sprawl so better for the environment. (that's a generalization)

Part II answer

We have never taken care of our poor. There have been periods when we did a better job and periods where we have done next to nothing. That said we have never taken care of our poor.

Case and point BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure).

This was a system devised by the Clinton Administration to close down and consolidate military bases as part of the post cold war peace benefit. There was Navy Training Center just north of downtown San Diego. This was high grade waterfront property worth Billions. It could house up to 10,000 people rather comfortably. It was on the BRAC list. Part of BRAC was that any closed base could be sold to the local government for the price of $1 if they agreed to use it for relief of the homeless and poor. San Diego bought the property for $1 fought the contract in court and eventually settled that they could develop the property in 2 years. 2 years later we had high end restaurants, fancy markets, mega-churches and fancy gated communities. No homeless shelters, no benefit to the poor. Benefit the port authority of San Diego, the City of San Diego and wealthy developers.
I'm a little lost here, Is the Clinton remark in responce to my request for giving me another presidents name that is as scum ball as scum bag. So are you blaming Clinton for the outcome? If it is in general ,yes I know that it happens all the time. It's a different playing field for the wealthy. They can make a hell of a lot louder response in court than a poor person can but then Where are we going with this? That's not politics .

No I gave you list. It is there.

I am explaining to you how we have failed and failed miserably to take care of our poor people.

That sounds good but in reality what does it look like. 200sqft apartments with 2 people and no kitchens? This solution has been tried before.

Read Jack London's The People of the Abyss.

Wasn't that well over a century ago?

The idea is more density near transportation, i.e. - multi-family, instead of just single family. They're not talking about building micro-units, just higher density uses. Regular apartments.

For example, there was a big fight in Berkeley last week over an empty parking lot near BART. A developer wants to build affordable multi-family housing. Many want to keep it a parking lot.

Andrew Jackson - nut job and genocidal
James K Polk - genocidal and power mad
James Buchanon - nut job who couldn't make a decision
U.S. Grant - Suffered from PTSD
Woodrow Wilson - Suffered a stroke and was permanently bedridden and faculty impaired for the last two years of his administration
Richard Nixon - nuff said
That is a powerful list.

They have always been for the wealthy , for decades the only reason they really exist is the transfer of wealth to the top. They have achieved what they want, since Reagans trickle down lie no one has received any of the massive new wealth of this country other then pennies , it has all gone to the top. Now with scum bag and the hate parties blatant handout to the wealthy, it will be transferred faster. They get it all now and they will get it all in the future but a hell of a lot faster.

My experience is not that help isn't available , its that some are unwilling to live within the perimeters of the requirements that go along with this help. Or are unwilling to even sign up for these benefits, some just not willing to go through the process to some just not knowing whats available.

Again if our goal is helping the poor then why attach conditions?

The system is designed to be extraneous so that people will give up instead of going through all that is needed to sign up for the benefits. This is baked into the recipe for how much a particular program will cost.

So tell me how is a person who is mentally ill to the point that they are not grounded in reality is going to be able to know what resources are available to them?

Again our government has always made it appear like we are helping poor. They are not actually helping the poor. It is something that most middle class liberals can make themselves feel good about. They don't have to do anything about actually helping the poor because they voted for someone who says they care about the poor. Meanwhile we literally have insane people wondering our streets every day with no food, no shelter and no hope. So again tell me how much our government cares about poor people.

My understanding is SD is having quite the homeless problems these days. You said you visited SF recently and it is almost impossible to be here and not come in contact with homeless/mentally ill people. Many issues fall on the right/left paradigm but the rights of mentally ill people I don't think is one of them. Not an easy answer from letting them be on the streets to forcing them into institutions of some sort. Dealing with homeless makes the news here on almost a daily basis. It is something we interact with everyday.
