What Song Are You Listening To, Right Now?

You can listen to a pre-release preview of Bob Dylan's 35th studio album "Tempest" on iTunes at: http://smarturl.it/tempestitunesstream

Set to release on September 11 and the 50th anniversary of Dylan's career.

I have to say, this is the best Dylan album I've heard in years.... maybe ever. Yes... it's THAT good!

He explores the roots of the music that inspired him, from early R&Bs Chess Records days, to early Nashville swing, stopping along the way to pay homage to the delta blues and Irish folk. The melodies are simple, the lyrics poetic and brilliant, as we've come to expect from Dylan. My personal favorites are the title cut, Tempest- A traditional Irish fiddle tune about the sinking of the Titanic. And the final cut on the album, Roll on John- a very cool Dylan tribute to John Lennon.

Dylan's voice is gravely and rough, sounding much like Louie Armstrong at times, but it works well with the raw R&B and bluesy numbers, as well as the ballads. The sometimes annoying Dylan harmonica is curiously missing from the entire album, replaced with fiddles and pedal steel guitars.

I'm predicting this will be a huge success for him. Go check it out, if you are into music heritage like me, you'll love it!

I heard a couple of tracks the other day, I suspect that it's a grower.

From Roll on John:

From the Liverpool docks to the red light Hamburg streets
Down in the quarry with the Quarrymen
Playin to the big crowds, playin to the cheap seats
Another day in the life on your way to your journey's end
Shine your light, move along, you burned so bright, roll on John.

Sailing through the trade winds bound for the south
Rags on your back just like any other slave
They tied your hands and they clamped your mouth
Wasn't no way out that deep dark cave
Shine your light, move along, you burned so bright, roll on John.

I heard the news today oh boy
They hauled your ship up on the shore
Now the city gone dark there is no more joy
They tore the heart right out and cut it to the core
Shine your light, move along, you burned so bright, roll on John.

First time I had read the Bible
It had stroke me as unwitty
I think it may started rumor
That the Lord ain't got no humor

Put me inside SSC
Let's test superstring theory
Oh yoi yoi, accelerate the protons
Stir it twice and then just add me, because

I don't read the Bible
I don't trust disciple
Even if they're made of marble
Or Canal Street bling

From the maelstrom of the knowledge
Into the labyrinth of doubt
Frozen underground ocean
Melting, nuking on my mind

Give me Everything Theory
Without Nazi uniformity
My brothers are protons
My sisters are neutrons
I stir it twice, it's instant family!

I don't read the Bible
I don't trust disciple
Even if they're made of marble
Or Canal Street bling

My brothers are protons
My sisters are neutrons
I stir it twice, dlja prekrastnih dam

Do you have sex maniacs
Or schizophreniacs
Or the astrophysicists in your family?
Was your grandma anti anti?
Was my grandpa bounty bounty?
They ask in embassy!

I don't read the Bible
I don't trust disciple
Even if they're made of marble
Or Canal Street bling

And my grandma she was anti!
And my grandpa he was bounty!
I stir it twice
Or Canal Street bling
Party, party, party, party, party, party
Now afterparty!

Since I was attacked by a small minded moron for posting this song, I am going to explain this songs meaning.

First time I had read the Bible
It had stroke me as unwitty
I think it may started rumor
That the Lord ain't got no humor

He is saying at first glance the Bible seems harsh and makes God seem cold. To fully appreciate this you need the lyrics to Super Taranta, an intermission on the same album.

Second time I read the Bible
I was thinking it's alright man

There are also some Russian words in there one is clearly "guitar" and he is saying he grabbed his guitar. In other words he realized the Bible was a great source of artisitc inspiration.

You see this eurotrash socialist read the Bible two more times than Dixie and most so called Christians have.

The point is once you understand the metaphors the Bible is kind of funny.

Put me inside SSC
Let's test superstring theory
Oh yoi yoi, accelerate the protons
Stir it twice and then just add me, because

Here is talking about his desire to be removed form the world of classification and divisions.

I don't read the Bible
I don't trust disciple
Even if they're made of marble
Or Canal Street bling

He does not trust the leaders or the sacred texts of religion, philosphy or law. It does not matter if they are ancient (marble) or moderns (Canal street bling). The last two metaphors also refer to detailed and structured or cheap and hastily general. This all may be a refence to false idols as well.

From the maelstrom of the knowledge
Into the labyrinth of doubt
Frozen underground ocean
Melting, nuking on my mind

Here he is talking about how extensive reading can be dizzying and make you doubt everything.

Give me Everything Theory
Without Nazi uniformity
My brothers are protons
My sisters are neutrons
I stir it twice, it's instant family!

But he wants to understand everything. He rejects the thinkers, spiritulaists and philosophies that demand complete conformity or purity test. Those who demand there is only one moral view are Nazi's.

I don't read the Bible
I don't trust disciple
Even if they're made of marble
Or Canal Street bling

My brothers are protons
My sisters are neutrons
I stir it twice, dlja prekrastnih dam

Male and female forces are at the center of everything. The Yin and the Yang. Stir is a reference to sex here. The foreign words "for beautiful ladies. "

Do you have sex maniacs
Or schizophreniacs
Or the astrophysicists in your family?

This is a reference to how these labels are subjective. The definitions are vague nonsense and could apply to anyone. They are very much like astrology readings. It's mostly bullshit used to attack nonconformists.

Was your grandma anti anti?
Was my grandpa bounty bounty?
They ask in embassy!

Were your relatives anti communists or enemies of the state. They ask this as he seeks asylum or help in immigrating. The labels are again meaningless. They were and they were not.

I don't read the Bible
I don't trust disciple
Even if they're made of marble
Or Canal Street bling

And my grandma she was anti!
And my grandpa he was bounty!
I stir it twice
Or Canal Street bling
Party, party, party, party, party, party
Now afterparty!

If that gets me to America, then yes they were. Now lets have sex, make some money and party! Now afterparty!

Yeah, he's a socialist. lol

I am so proud to have played whatever little part in destroying the control of the record labels. Indie music has WON and continues to push forward with genre bending music. It has opened my own eyes to the lies I was fed.

The Kings of Leon went to Europe and made a name for themselves with southern rock. Mumford & Sons came out of England playing bluegrass and quoting literary greats from both sides of the Atlantic.

Before this only the truly talented could push beyond the stereotypes and many of them got lost in their roles. For instance, the Fab Four sang wholesome/crappy pop songs and then became "socialists" or so some idiots will have you believe. Johnny Cash was a "hick" who became an "Outlaw" or so some idiots will have you believe.

But we need to look beyond ALL of our labels. Even some fans think the Indie greats have sold out and do not even get the genuis of Zach Braff.

Yeah, it's a pretty awesome song. I just started listening to a bunch of my older play lists and that song got stuck in my head. Hear is another.

You can make a plan
Carve it into stone
Like a feather falling
It is still unknown
Until the clock speaks up
Says it's time to go
You can choose the high
Or the lower road
You might clench your fist
You might fork your tongue
As you curse or praise
All the things you've done
And the faders move
And the music dies
As we pass over
On the arc of time

So you nurse your love like a wounded dove
In the covered cage of night
Every star is crossed by frenetic thoughts
That separate and then collide
And they twist like sheets until you fall asleep
Then they finally unwind
It's a black balloon
It's a dream you'll soon deny

I hear if you make friends
With Jesus Christ
You will get right up
From that chalk outline
And you'll get dolled up
And you'll dress in white
All to take your place
In his chorus line

And then in you'll come with those marching drums
In a saintly compromise
No more whisky slurs, no more blonde haired girls
For your whole eternal life
And you'll do the dance that was choreographed
At the very dawn of time
See, I told you son
The day would come

You will die, you die, you die, you die
You will die, you die, you die, you die
You will die, you die, you die, you die
You will die, you die, you die

To the deepest part of the human heart
The fear of death expands
Until we crack the code we have always known
But could never understand
On a circuit board we will soon be born

Again and again and again and again
And again and again and again and again
And again and again and again and again
And again and again and again and again
