The terms refer to different things. "Republic" defines the structure of the national govt as being other than a monarchy. "Democracy" defines how the structure is fundamentally assembled. Our democratic republic is different from China's non-democratic republic. Obviously almost every national government is now a republic with but a few monarchies remaining. The current form of government in China is oligarchy. It is not a republic.
A democracy is government by popular vote. There is no constitution and there are no representatives. There is no such thing as a 'democratic republic'.
There is no such thing as an oligarchy republic either.
