Give me a freaking break! Those push polls got George W bush into the white house, and it was well established they came from the right. Before he became a complete sell out, McCain couldn't even look at bush, there is pretty well-known footage of him pointing his finger right into that spoiled psycopath's face. However it is the left who gets the most use out of the ineffective tactic. Nobdy in their right minds believed it and it was so easily refuted that it was one of the weakest tactics ever used in politics.

Wrong. These dirty tricks and smears are absolutely effective, and have been perfected for 30 years by the Rove/Nixon machine. It costs the republicans nothing to do them - their base isn't going to wring their hands and refuse to vote for smear artists, criminals, and hypocrites. Hello? Swift boaters plus Bush? And the MSM certainly never does enough to debunk, or hold those to account who engage in them. So it's off the radar screen of independents and middle america.
Rove absolutely used these smear tactics to turn Texas into a solid red, republican state. Rove surrogates used push polling to smear Ann Richards, implying that either she, or large members of her staff were lesbians. It was effective, particularly in the bible belt. Kerry was turned from a war hero to a coward, with little to no cost with the GOP. Al Gore was turned from a competent civil servant into a "serial liar". The smears on Obama have already convinced a large number of people that he's muslim at best, or he attends a racist african american church at worst.
If smears are done effectively, there's virtually no blow back on the GOP. Some pundits may tut-tut with the tongues, but there's hardly ever any accountabiliy for clever lies that fly under the radar. It's what the GOP has been doing for 30 years. Personally I belive it is the principal reason George W. Bush got the Republican nomination and thus was president for 8 years. So I think it was GWB who got the most use out of it. South Carolina was the turning point where McCain lost the nomination last time!
