Why the Electoral College?

Dumb shit, slave states had larger popultions if they counted slaves. Not if they could not. The slave states had smaller amounts of ELIGIBLE voters. Therefore they wrung out the 3/5ths compromise.

The census counts all the residents of a state, not just eligible voters. The southern stares wanted all the slaves included in the count but did not want them counted for purposes of taxation; as a result, they accepted the 3/5 of representation and taxation.

The 3/5 compromise hurt the slave states in terms of representation but helped them for taxes. It ended up to their disadvantage because there were generally no federal per capita taxes.

It doesn't matter, even with slaves the South wasn't as large as the North...white devil.

And btw...when they wrote the Constitution only 2 states didn't have slaves...3 if you believe Vermont.

I like this part of the article:

They didn't know how back then that today's media would be manipulating the citizenry the way it does when it manipulates the news, but they did indeed know that attempts to manipulate the citizenry were a threat.

Yes, yes, the unsubstantial people require a ruling aristocracy to choose for them.

"There may have been a popular misperception prior to the 2016 election that Democrats had a large number of solidly blue states that made it much easier for them to reach 270 than the Republicans. But professional handicappers never considered states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin to be solid for the Democrats, even in the 2008 and 2012 elections — and any notion that they continue to be solidly Democratic going forward was exploded by Trump’s wins in those states, making his use of the present tense dubious.

There may even be a modest Republican lean to the Electoral College in this political moment, but we couldn’t find evidence of a permanent bias either way."

That is the point, blue turtle, the South would have had more representation if all the slaves were counted which would have lessened the size difference.

By 1803 there were nine free states.

If you are too stupid to see that the American conservatives of the Civil War times were predominantly Democrats...and that they are now predominantly Republican...you are simply TOO stupid to discuss this issue.

No personal ad hominem attack here when confronted with the irrefutable truth of documented history. Again...what party had a representative serving until 2010 that was a member of the KKK?

What party introduced Jim Crow at the federal level? Hint...the progressive Woodrow Wilson. What party used the KKK as an American Terrorist arm in order to control the blacks and stop them from voting or owning property 60 years after the civil war? What party fought tooth and nail from having to ratify the 19th amendment....in the 20s, again decades removed from the civil war? Reality: THE GOP has supported women's right to own property and vote since 1854. In fact the GOP had granted women the right to vote in the state of Wyoming 50 years before the 19th amendment was finally ratified in spite of democrat opposition.

FACT: THE GOP has always supported Women's and Minorities rights since their inception in the Mid 19th century. Nothing has changed. There is no running from the facts.

Just how ignorant does one have to be in order to keep supporting the modern democrat controlled inner city plantations? The democrats have been running black communities for over 50 years now....promising to end poverty. Reality: the socialist policies of the left have turned these communities with no father figures willing to accept their inherent responsibilities of being A MAN....into breeding grounds for violence and crime while making them a economic wasteland with no one willing to establish any black businesses for obvious reasons. Every time a left wing race baiting politician says JUMP (Like the idiot Maxine, or Big Brother Al, Uncle Jesse...etc.)…….there is a riot that destroys what little progress some supposed UNCLE TOM business owner has built up after the last riot.

Yes...the irrefutable, documented history truth is...that the American conservatives of Civil War days...were in the Democratic Party.

Now, almost all American conservatives are polluting the Republican Party.

We have no quarrel there.

FYI: the GOP has always been CONSERVATIVE in the fact it supports and upholds the US constitution and rule of law in this constitutional republic. The civil war was not about slavery, as slavery was legal as dictated by the majority.....it was a war between the GOP and the Democrat Party....the party of the 4 S's, SLAVERY, SECCUSION, SEGREGATION AND SOCIALISM. Nothing has changed. Look around what party TODAY demands that all groups be separated and segregated from one another based upon RACE, GENDER, RELIGION, even geographical location? The modern democrat is no different today than he was under the rule of Andrew Jackson.....you simply attempt to take whatever you want in order to garner power and personal wealth.....you use women, minorities, the poor, etc., as nothing but political tools. You are against patriotism, you can't survive unless the nation remains divided at its core. I have never encountered a happy well adjusted left winger, just like the Nazi's they walk around like someone has just pissed in their soup bowl while marching in a fascist manner LOCK STEP with a political stick up their ass.

yes slave states wanted them all to count, but blacks could not vote. They wanted the greater numbers of representatives, so white slave owners could have more power. It simply gave the white slave owners greater representation. That was all the were after.
Those days are gone, the electoral college should be gone with the wind.

Not logical.

First, that was not the primary reason for the electoral college (except by those who have a racial interpretation for everything).

Second, the other methods for choosing the president would have still given the white slave owners the power. The most popular method was election by Congress but many objected to that because it would create a weak executive dependent on the legislative branch.

1) The Republican Party, from the moment of its formation, was considered rather liberal...anti-slavery.

2) The Civil War WAS about slavery. Don't take my word for it...read the Declarations of Secession Of Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas.

They all claim the reason they are seceding is because of the slavery issue.

Nazis like you ought to educate yourselves BEFORE posting.

While slavery was the main reason, it was not about keeping vs ending slavery since the Republican party, president, or Congress did not have the power to prohibit it.

I suspect the secession documents tried to keep the reasons simple and emotional (much like today's politics).
