No one does irrigation ditches quite like Ohio!

The scary part is that it's like this from Columbus, OH west to central Nebraska. Nearly 1,000 miles. OH...uhhh we don't have irrigation ditches up here. Don't need them. We get about 35" of rain a year and our soil has this stuff called "Top Soil". Ya know? That stuff that keeps all our water from perculating into the ground and makes our soil 10 times more productive than Mississippi's.

Those little lines you see? Ya know that ya'll don't have in Mississippi. Those aren't irrigation ditches. These are things we call "roads". We build them with our tax dollars so farmers can get heavy machinery into their fields and so they can bring their poduce to market more efficiently.

Hey, and guess what? Those rural farm roads are actually paved with asphalt. They're not dirt roads like ya'll have down there in Mississippi....if you have them at all. Which mostly you don't.

There's no reason why this has to be violent. It can be handled like to old friends who say "We have incompatable values and irreconciliable differences. It's time for an amicable divorce."

But that's a cop out. The real question is what can we do to change the cultural values of the South to meet the needs of the 21th century? How do we teach them how to be patriotic other than military adventurism, including economic patriotism? How do we teach them to value public investment in infrastructure and education which are so vital to our modern standard of living? How do we teach them to value secular government? How do we teach them that a prosperous, well educated, skilled and well paid working class is important for our future? How do we teach them to respect racial and gender equity?

Those are tough questions that need to be answered and I simply do not have the answer.

You're going to get the government to force them to do your bidding and conform to your way of thinking and you know it. A hundred and fifty years of Yankee occupation leaving the south devastated and the poorest region of the country and using the south as your agricultural colony still hasn't produced the results you want because your frustration over your inferior enemies in the south as them still not pleasing you is on account of the fact that you've never been able to destroy an idea.
