Yep. You are wise. The only possibilities in human sex chromosomes are 1) XX or 2) XY. There is no possibility of YY chromosomes because mothers are always women with XX chromosomes, who can only contribute, and always contribute, an X strand to the chromosomes. Fathers are always men with XY chromosomes, and they have roughly a 50% chance of imparting the X strand and creating a daughter, and 50% chance of imparting the Y strand and creating a son., i.e. determination of the child's gender falls on the father's sperm (and random chance).

Children, both males and females, can develop abnormalities. Nonetheless, gender is established prior to all development.

Ergo, not only were Khelif and Yu-Ting born male, they were both male at conception. At no point in their respective existences were either ever female.
