Agreed other countries are different. The thread is about carrying a gun in the car in the US, not packing heat in Germany or Japan.
One can apply the rest of the world's rules to one's self, even when in the USA. I am allowed to apply an obligation to retreat to myself, even if I am in the USA. Obviously, I cannot force others to apply it.

My question, which I am asking myself, is whether I should apply an obligation to retreat to myself. I do not have an answer to that question, it is something I am mulling in my mind.

I do not carry a gun in my car, and do not own a gun. I am thinking about owning a gun, and thinking about whether it makes sense to carry in my car.

WHAT ABOUT CROSSING OVER BORDERS???

I cross state borders into NJ, sometimes without even thinking about it. It would be easy to get a carry license in Pennsylvania, but not in NJ. Having a gun in the car would make it easy for me to accidentally commit a crime, so I do not think I will carry a gun in my car.

why should one have a duty to retreat in the face of an aggressor?

wtf is wrong with you people?

why should one have a duty to retreat in the face of an aggressor?
Because that makes death less likely. The hope is to retreat, let the situation calm down, and work out what went wrong. It makes mistaken self defense far less likely.

There are a number of people who are getting killed doing nothing wrong, because they are mistaken for aggressors. If you retreat first, that gives time and distance to work things out.

stand your ground laws and castle doctrine is how should it all should be.
Stand your ground is based on the claim that it would question your honor to retreat. So if you kill someone based on stand-your-ground it is defense of honor, not self defense.

Whether he is prejudiced or not, New Orleans has a very high violent crime rate. But, unlike many other major cities, the violent crime tends to be local-on-local and in neighborhoods that tourists don't go into.
Based on this recent study, New Orleans didn't make the top 10:

Of course you can. My philosophy is that it's better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it. Retreating is the prefered option. Using a gun for self-defense is a last resort.

Example: I'm in Wally-World at the back of the store and hear gun fire in the front of the store. It's the police officer's job to run toward the gunfire. It's my job to go in the other direction and take as many innocents as possible with me. Hopefully back into the storage area and out a backdoor. If the gunman comes after us, I'll do my best to shoot him down.

If you are not used to guns, we can discuss it. A good first gun is a pump shotgun followed by a 9mm or larger pistol and then a scoped hunting rifle if you plan on joining the Resistance.

Jesus H. Christ!
Why? If I'm headed close to the Mexico border I bring a pistol. I'm going to the "gunfire" district or other relatively unsafe part of town, I bring a pistol. I'm going out to dinner at a nice restaurant in an upscale part of town? No, I don't need a pistol for that so why bring one? It's common sense.

the hope for whom?

a victim is better off defending himself.

When the police come, and see you walking around with a gun, what are they supposed to do?

You think the police should just shoot anyone carrying a gun, Walt? 41 shots? LOL

The gun would be back in my pants pocket...if I took it out at all.

They aren’t on that list due to their low and declining population (for good reason).

New Orleans has a 2025 population of 351,399. New Orleans is currently declining at a rate of -1.78% annually and its population has decreased by -8.31%since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 383,241 in 2020.

What makes it more dangerous for law abiding citizens is that the city is a checkerboard of well to do neighborhoods and urban rat nests.
You can’t drive half a mile to a friend’s house without going through one of those. That’s the reason drivers there are no longer ticketed for running stop signs and red lights.
