Powell endorses Obama

congratulations colin powell - i too have become dismayed at the direction the gop has taken

what happened to the fiscally conservative gop - the supporter of personal rights

LULZ I still woulda voted for Gore. I just would have hated Republicans a little less.

Maybe not Kerry though. Probably the only good thing about Bush winning in 2004 is that we're looking at an Obama presidency.

I think that maybe unfair. I remember reading something by Powell when I was in college, a long time ago. He wasn't a general yet, obviously. He was really writing about what he thought kids in the lower socioeconomic level needed and needed to believe. What was implied was discipline, of mind and body, not unusual from a military person. I think for a long time, he saw more of that being espoused by the GOP and went with it. Not so true for quite awhile and this was his way of reacting.

I think Obama's race may play a part, I think moreso where he stands right now in the polls and what Powell thinks the impact on his presidency may have on the youth.

I disagree that an Obama presidency will be good for the youth or any of us, but I wouldn't put nefarious motives upon Powell.

And we hear from our first Fox news listener! LOL

Today shall begin the Right Wing talk radio blitz of "All them darkies stick together". Today is going to be all about how Judas Iscariot Powell is a black man and who else would he vote for? Maybe at Palin rallies she can mention Powell's endorsement and then those non-repesentative attendees can scream out traitor for a new name.

Limbaugh: Where are the inexperienced, white liberals Powell has endorsed?

Rush Limbaugh said Colin Powell's decision to get behind Barack Obama appeared to be very much tied to Obama's status as the first African-American with a chance to become president.

"Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race," Limbaugh wrote in an e-mail. "OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I'll let you know what I come up with."

As for Powell's statement of concern this morning about the sort of Supreme Court justices a President McCain might appoint, Limbaugh wrote: "I was also unaware of his dislike for John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy and Antonin Scalia. I guess he also regrets Reagan and Bush making him a four-star [general] and secretary of state and appointing his son to head the FCC. Yes, let's hear it for transformational figures."

Well. I will say it didn't change my vote. But then I've pretty much decided to leave that area blank this year. The Libertarians brought me a Religious Right nutjob dragged from the death throes of his political life, and who will return there when this election is over. The Greens bring me Cynthia McKinney. Barack Obama is too expensive and Sarah Palin isn't quite ready... (McCain is simply too old to be taken seriously, any doctor will tell you that more nasty stuff happens physically to you when you are that old than any of them want to talk about, he should be finishing rather than attempting to start a term as President).

I seriously am left with nobody to vote for.... and I refuse to just "vote against" somebody this time.

I love this. Many Republicans will call this endorsement meaningless, but I'm sure Limbaugh will devote most of his show today to it.

"I guess he also regrets Reagan and Bush making him a four-star [general] and secretary of state and appointing his son to head the FCC. Yes, let's hear it for transformational figures."

Oh...the ingratitude!

Only the far right nutjobs will call this endorsement meaningless. Powell has pretty much always been a moderate Republican. He appeals to moderates in both parties as well as Independents. I doubt there are too many endorsements Obama could receive that could help him more.

I agree. This one really helps Obama out......and he didn't need much help to begin with.

Were you crying when you wrote this?:pke:

Danged straight many of us wanted him to run. I think we'd have had President Powell and Iraq wouldn't have even been on the radar.

He's pretty big on giving back to the community and helping 3rd world nations. That scores big with middle of the road dems. Who knows, if he'd have bowed out of bush's admin before the Iraq debacle he might be the nominee now.

I would have supported Powell regardless. He is one of the few, one of the best.

Not at all, given the way the McCain camp has been running lately I kind of figured this might occur. I have always liked and respected Powell.

If Obama wasn't such a socialist, muslim, traitor I might just vote for him because of Powells endorsement. ;)

for all the braindead idiots on the far left... I am totally, 100%, absolutely kidding with the muslim and traitor comments.

"I am totally, 100%, absolutely kidding with the muslim and traitor comments."

But, of course, not the socialist...

Well, since the thread's about Powell, here's what he had to say on the topic:

""Taxes are always a redistribution of money. Most of the taxes that are redistributed go back to those who pay them -- in roads and airports and hospitals and schools," President Bush's former secretary of state said. "And taxes are necessary for the common good, and there's nothing wrong with examining what our tax structure is or who should be paying more, who should be paying less.

"For us to say that makes you a socialist, I think, is an unfortunate characterization that isn't accurate."
