Griner only had 0.7 grams of prescribed hash oil. That amount weighs less than a stick of gum.

It was obviously a political decision by the Kremlin to
criminally prosecute that as a "significant' amount of hash, and dish out a ~maximum sentence.

They are missing all the positives of this 9 year sentence. The Russians are saving her from the trauma of having to listen to the national anthem and being hunted by the evil police in America. Too bad she didn't bring labronda with her.
 
The United States has offered to exchange Russian prisoners for American citizens including Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan.

One source familiar with the situation said that Washington was willing to exchange convicted arms trafficker Viktor Bout, whose life helped inspire the 2005 Hollywood film "Lord of War" starring Nicholas Cage.

Russian officials have said a deal has not been reached.
