Brits resort to pulling own teeth

Who said private practice should be made illegal?
Canada. I watch other places who have taken such a system on, and find them lacking. There is a reason the best doctors leave Canada to practice in the US. Amazingly it isn't solely greed either. They prefer to be able to actually practice medicine as they have been taught.

It's not. Where we are now in terms of scientific advancement has (or had) little to do with the profit motive.
Rubbish. It has had much to do with the profit motive. Cures are not made just for fun, and there is a reason that they cost.

That's not an answer. If education is free then the investment equation is redundant.

Yep.
but those who had to pay will whine as we are already seeing.
And elitism might actually go with individual accomplishments in your field instead of money aquired.
How shameful!

History has said so. We have seen places where such motivation has been removed, they are not places I want to live.

Rubbish, humanity worked on co-operatiion for thousands of years. Competition has been good for a few hundred years but don't make a sibboleh out of it.

Cooperation never removed or replaced competition. Name one place that has taken the profit motivation away and done well without first reintroducing the profit motive.

Agreed, Canada should take a leaf out of our book. They have organised health care along provincial lines, they should learn from us.

Cooperation and competition are diametrically opposed. The competitive model has been good but we need to rethink it.

That is right not a profit motive at all.
Vytorin is a combination of 2 drugs. The combo patented pill cost me $125 per month. The 2 individual drugs that make up the combo pill cost me $30.

This is wrong, it's simply just flat out incorrect. Cooperation and competition are not diametrically opposed. All you have to do is look at a sports team to realize that this is simply an untruth that sounds deep and thus keeps getting repeated, but it nevertheless just pretense. It ignores reality.

Cooperation came about because of competition. People realized that by banding together they could defeat larger opponents.

You're really a complete moron if you think competition is something new.

We have always lived in a social context filled with relationships of both trust and competition in all realms.

We're not talking about football, this is about provision of health services, not winning a game. Why is that so hard for people to understand? The objective is to deliver health care. What is the most effective and efficient way of doing so?

So tell me how how one man could bring down a mammoth.

By the way, the personal insults are getting bit much. If you can't make your point without accusing me of being a "moron" perhaps you need to think about whether or not you should post in a public forum.

a free (but non slave labor and no poisons) market.

It doesn't change human nature and reality. Competition is enhanced through cooperation, they are not diametrically opposed, cooperation is just an extension of competition.

Pretending that cooperation has nothing to do with competition is preposterous. The only reason cooperation came about was because of competition. It is the reason that herds are formed, it is the reason that some of your cells became a heart while others became the central nervous system as each of the cells competed for the proper chemicals to create one or the other.

All life is made in competition and continues in it throughout its life. Pretending that it is somehow 'evil' or 'not natural' is simply outright lying to oneself.

Cah humans choose to co-operate or compete?
