Clarence Thomas secretly went on lavish vacations in luxury jets and superyachts paid

How many "friends" do you have who pay for your vacations and entertainment?

For New Years Eve I was given a completely free place to stay in NYC to see phish for 4 nights. They also drove me around. I only paid for my tickets and my food.

Crashing at your friends house for a few days is not like jetting around the world and going on luxury yacht cruises for free.

Maybe this only the way liberals think, but I don't freeload off my Mommy or off my friends. It doesn't seem right to not pay your own way.

Thomas, a conservative who joined the nation's highest court in 1991 and is currently the longest-serving member, has accepted the trips from real estate magnate and Republican donor Harlan Crow nearly every year for more than two decades, ProPublica reported, citing flight records, internal documents, and interviews.

Crow, in a statement to ProPublica, said he has been friends with Thomas and his wife, Ginni, since 1996 and said: "The hospitality we have extended to the Thomas's over the years is no different from the hospitality we have extended to our many other dear friends."

According to the report, Thomas has vacationed with Crow on his 162-foot yacht around the world, flown around on Crow's Bombardier Global 5000 jet, and stayed at his private resort in the Adirondacks almost every summer.

Ethics experts and former and current judges that ProPublica spoke with said Thomas violated the normal conduct of judges by accepting such trips and may have violated the law by failing to disclose them on his annual financial records.

The bombshell report comes as the Supreme Court has been under increased scrutiny over ethics concerns. Critics have called for the justices to adopt an enforceable code of conduct and to be subject to stricter financial reporting rules.

If he did this and it can be proven I'm all for executing him. I'm serious about that, this is a serious crime.

Is it a secret or not?

It would seem that the hospitality really wasn't a secret.

... Thomas has vacationed with Crow ... almost every summer.
This doesn't seem very much like a secret.

Ethics experts ... said Thomas violated the normal conduct of judges
Wait, is this a question of secrecy or a question of ethics?

Is there a law prohibiting judges from deviating from the "normal conduct of judges"?

What is the Federal statute number for the "normal conduct of judges"?

The bombshell report
Truly explosive, like a brass, pull-mandrell rivet

... comes as the Supreme Court has been under increased scrutiny over ethics concerns.
Who has been scrutinizing the Supreme Court and where can I read the report?

Critics have called for ...
... anything to do with secret hospitality?

The courts aquited him of committing a crime.

And the claim that Dumber than you made was that Democrats tolerated corrupt judges, because Alcee Hastings, which was a categorically false claim.

We don't live on an egalitarian planet.

Rank will always have privileges, and having wealthy friends is one of them.

What matters about Thomas is that he's a shitty SCOTUS justice.

If he were good one, I wouldn't mind what perks he got.

People concentrate on the wrong things out of petty jealousy.
They should care that he's a tap dancing, watermelon-eating Uncle Tom Republican black man,
not that he gets a few free perks.
He's probably at his most civilized when enjoying those perks, actually.

If you're going that route, aren't your claims contradictory? Would a tap dancing Uncle Tom really eat watermelon?

Since it is Flashback Friday it reminds me of Ice Cube's hit, True To The Game and his three tests for a black man: (let's see which boxes Thomas checks if you think he's an Uncle Tom)

tries to be white or a Jew: (check)

moves out of the ghetto: (check)

marries a white woman: (check)

An element of irony in today's world that people still complain about the Bohemian Grove being exclusive. It's a place where college educated people get away from the poorly educated and can enjoy themselves.

Clarence Thomas and Bohemian Grove: Inside the secretive California retreat making headlines

A GOP billionaire donor treated the Supreme Court justice to luxury trips for years, including to the all-male retreat in Sonoma County, according to a new ProPublica report.

Bohemian Grove, the rustic Bay Area men-only retreat for the rich and powerful, is back in the news with a report in ProPublica on Thursday that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas secretly accepted luxury trips around the world from a Republican donor. The trips included a visit to the Bohemian Grove.

Here’s what you need to know about the secluded gathering spot — sometimes called a campground — in rural Sonoma County.

What is Bohemian Grove?

Bohemian Grove is a remote 2,700-acre camp nestled among the redwoods in Monte Rio, a small Sonoma County town along the Russian River. The site plays home to a controversial two-weeklong yearly gathering of political leaders — sometimes including presidents — and captains of industry. It’s held in July. The list of attendees and what goes on inside the heavily guarded encampment is kept secret, though stories of attendees, their antics and traditions have leaked out over the years.

Who owns Bohemian Grove?

San Francisco’s secretive Bohemian Club, founded in 1872 by five newspapermen, a Shakespearean actor, a vintner and a local merchant, owns the redwood retreat. The club reportedly has about 2,500 members as well as a six-story brick clubhouse at the corner of Post and Taylor streets. Club representatives insist that the nonprofit organization is dedicated to the simple enjoyment of music, literature and drama.

What goes on inside Bohemian Grove?

While the goings-on behind the fences of Bohemian Grove are confidential, they’re rumored to include skits and performances, including the Cremation of Care, an opening ceremony of sorts, said to banish the concerns of the modern world and focus on the trees and nature. During their time at the Grove, the men stay in rustic cabins. They’ve been rumored to roam around naked or in robes, urinate on trees, drink profusely and tell politically sensitive tales, all in the spirit of male bonding.

Why has the retreat been so controversial?

The main source of controversy has been the exclusion of women from the annual encampment. But this being the Bay Area, Bohemian Grove also has been dogged by a host of conspiracy theories and criticized for perpetuating a culture of elitism and exclusivity. In 2019, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted to stop providing security services to the annual encampment by its Sheriff’s Office — at cost — as it had done for 15 years.

I heard on TV that he has accepted about 500,000 bucks worth of special treatment. Not only should supremes not be above bribery, but they should avoid the appearance of it. Thomas has been an embarrassment to the court since he lied his way onto it. He went 10 years without asking a question or making a point in the court case hearings.

I went out on a friend's yacht. He has the right to do what he wants.

You're just a racist outraged that a black man dare leave your plantation and not serve the democrat Reich.

Los Angeles Times reported about Justice Thomas' gifts 20 years ago. After that he stopped disclosing them:whoa:

It was 2004 when the Los Angeles Times disclosed that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas had accepted expensive gifts and private plane trips paid for by Harlan Crow, a wealthy Texas real estate investor and a prominent Republican donor.

The gifts included a Bible that once belonged to abolitionist Frederick Douglass — a gift Thomas valued at $19,000 — and a bust of Abraham Lincoln valued at $15,000.

"I just knew he was a fan of Frederick Douglass, and I saw that item come available at an auction and I bought it for him," Crow explained at the time.

He also flew Thomas on his personal plane to Northern California to be his guest at the Bohemian Grove, which held all-male retreats for government and business leaders.

Thomas refused to comment on the article, but it had an impact: Thomas appears to have continued accepting free trips from his wealthy friend. But he stopped disclosing them.

On Thursday, ProPublica reported that Thomas and his wife, Ginni, enjoyed lavish trips across the globe in recent years at Crow's expense, including "nine days of island-hopping" off Indonesia in 2019 aboard a 162-foot "superyacht staffed by a coterie of attendants and a private chef."

That's a stark contrast from the way Thomas often speaks in public about his summer travels, describing driving a blue motor home and staying in campgrounds.

But ProPublica reported that his summer trips regularly include stays in private resorts paid for by Crow, including at Crow's ranch in East Texas and his resort in the Adirondacks in upstate New York.

"The extent and frequency of Crow’s apparent gifts to Thomas have no known precedent in the modern history of the U.S. Supreme Court," ProPublica wrote, adding "these trips appeared nowhere on Thomas’ financial disclosures.

It remains unclear whether Thomas has violated any law or regulation by accepting such gifts and not disclosing them.

You have no shame. The guy is a huge right-wing contributor and power. He took Clarence on an extended trip through Indonesia. That trip was the price of double Thomas's salary. https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-scotus-undisclosed-luxury-travel-gifts-crow He was in far right super conservative wealthy people extended meetings. This was no vacation. It was an entry into the wealthy conservative club.
Thomas is doing real damage to the court. His wife is a super right-wing fundraiser and organizer. Since Clarence has been on the court, the supreme favorability rating dropped 30 points.
