Death Penalty, will this help make America great again?

I'm pro DP. With todays advances in DNA proper identification is vastly improved. I do feel the victims families wishes should be the tipping point.

These endless appeals should end. The convicted should have the right to appeal up to the SCOTUS. If an appeal is rejected then the next level decides and so on till the high court.

One appeal,if upheld,30 days to say your goodbyes.

Not sure it weighs in either way. It's time to put the 'slam dunk' cases (Dylan Roof, Jared Loughner, etc.)out of their misery. When there's no doubt about guilt, kill the bastards. In the manner that they employed on their victims would be great, but suffering a botched lethal injection is a close second.

What about the cost?? It costs a few million a year to hold one of them on death row~for years & years..

I use to be pro but because of the "mistakes" I am very reluctant to support it. SOme jurisdictions are perhaps very responsible, others prob should be in prison as well..
That's the problem. If it were a case of no doubt, there shouldn't be an appeal process.

That's my biggest objection to the death penalty -- executing the wrong person. Also, it appears that it is applied unfairly and that a disproportionate number of death row inmates are mentally challenged, poor, and/or non-white.
Yes. It must be employed in a very narrow scope. With daily mass killings, it shouldn't be hard to discern guilt from reasonable doubt cases.

Putting them in prison for life keeps them from murdering again. Be honest, pros are about revenge.
Putting them in prison for life gives them the opportunity to kill other inmates or guards. It also gives them the opportunity to escape and kill again.

And, really, isn't it the antis who are about revenge. Don't cut off their suffering by killing them. Make them suffer in a cage for the rest of their miserable lives.

The death penalty has never shown itself to stop other murderers., Do you think life in jail is not a huge and terrible punishment? Do you think a perp says "I will kill him because it is only life in prison?. If it was the death penalty I would decide not to. Is that what you call thinking?
I know there are some people who would enjoy watching an execution. I wonder what goes on in their hateful and life disrespecting minds. Revenge is atavistic. We are supposed to be evolving into higher beings,. I would get no solace from taking a persons life. Especially since over 4 percent of those found guilty of murder are not.

Actually, a 4% failure rate isn't bad for that sort of endeavor, but we can do better. Also capital cases have years, sometimes decades, to appeal.

I've slowly changed my thinking over the years about it as well. If we execute an innocent man or woman, are we any different than the murderer we want to remove?

That being said, there are crimes so heinous, and criminals so apt to continue to kill even behind bars, that they need to be removed from this world -- as long as we are certain of their guilt.

This is where I am. If we’re certain of guilt carry it out swiftly and efficiently.

Same thing.Just a lesser degree. Treat crimes with horrible violence.

Well I think we all feel that way sometimes but is that really effective??

One option, as used in Singapore, as an example, is corporal punishment/public humiliation- caning & the like & it seems to have pretty good outcomes.....

Thoughts??

What's violent about an injection?

I guess it not working and people suffering for long periods qualifies. Many places quit using injections.
hanging 2721 85 botched
gas 593 32
electrocution 4375 84
injection 1054 75
firing squad 34 0

Botching happens. Of course, over 4 percent are executing innocent people. Is your revenge worth that?

Culture is far more important than punishment.

It's not revenge. It's removing threats before they kill again. We should put some effort into reducing that 4% figure, if that's even accurate.
