Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris

“In our nation’s 248 year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Mr. Cheney, 83, said in a statement. After Mr. Trump’s actions trying to steal the 2020 presidential election and then using “lies and violence” to keep himself in power, Mr. Cheney said, “he can never be trusted with power again.”

There was no election in 2020. DON'T TRY TO BLAME DEMOCRAT RIOTS AND VIOLENCE ON TRUMP!

So?

More than a few Master's and Doctoral theses will be written about the transition of American political parties after the end of the Cold War.
Will be? What year do you think it is, Sybil?
Agreed a major turning point in the GOP, and its eventual demise, was the popular support of the self-divisive term RINO. The final result is people leaving the Republican Party leaving a core of far Right authoritarians who no longer support the traditional Republican ideals of a strong economy and national defense.
Nah. A RINO is just a Democrat wearing a false flag.
While the Democratic party has shrunk a bit too, the Republican party shrunk twice as much as shown in the link below. The ranks of the Independents have grown and, it appears, its cost the Republicans more.

Argument from randU. Attempted proof by randU.

Now, watch - "he's not really a conservative....he was always a RINO."
You bring up a subtle point that should be addressed. Yes, Cheney always was what we are calling "a RINO" today except that back when he was VP, the DNC had not quite completed their takeover of the RNC, i.e. successfully formed the Uniparty. When Cheney was VP, the DNC takeover of the RNC was well underway and the Republicans that behaved exactly as corrupt Democrats were called "Establishment Republicans." Back then it was difficult to tell who was responsible exactly for the Republicans abandonment of fiscal responsibility, but Republican voters grew weary of Republican politicians campaigning on standard Republican planks and then abandoning those positions entirely.

George Bush was too early of a RINO for anyone to recognize him for what he was, and the DNC takeover of the RNC was a very stealthy operation. It wasn't until John McCain, Al Franken's vacation buddy, got the Presidential nomination did people start to wonder what was going on. THEN Mitt Romney got the next nomination. All Republicans were wondering if one somehow had to be the left-most Republican to get the nomination. Nobody knew at the time that the DNC was approving the Republican candidates in the same manner that they approve their own, i.e. by fiat.

Trump exposed the whole racket. Trump's threat to restore the Republican Party to the way it should be caused the DNC to go all in to protect their investment, and caused all the RINOs to go full bore "attack mode" at Trump. One of the reasons so many Americans are die-hard Trump supporters is that he brought all of this to light and saved them from further manipulation and deception.

Dick Cheney is just the latest to do the equivalent of confessing his unworthiness to be involved in any political arena or to hold any public trust.

So to answer your question directly, yes, there is nothing new with Cheney. He was always an establishment Republican, and today we call those RINOs.
