I thought the religious right hated Catholics?

It is always surprising how little self professed rightwing Christians actually know about the history, scope, and diversity of the Christian tradition

Yes, prob quite boring for many but as a lover of history I found it quite interesting....... @ least some parts........

For many, not all, the bible is for thumping, not reading...........

& when you do read it's for application, applied to others, not self........

Most churches use to have their stated creeds & such & although not required it was highly recommended........

Over the years I found that many more atheist knew church history, doctrine & teaching than Christians, w/ the exception of the JW's who go through life long indoctrination, not for self edification/knowledge but to win biblical arguments.............

Ooooh, that thing! Hahaha! Wow, who knew that Stench could read anything other than selected Bible things, Jack Chick tracts, and Breitbart?!

Not surprised you never read the classic. Most did in high school. It's probably never taught anymore
in English Lit. because of the religious basis of the content.

I have a hard time calling this Barrett woman a Catholic. She's part of a cult and and that's scary.

"The New York Times reported that Barrett and her husband, who are parents to seven children, are members of an obscure group called People of Praise.

"Members of the group swear a lifelong oath of loyalty, called a covenant, to one another, and are assigned and are accountable to a personal adviser, called a 'head' for men and a 'handmaid' for women," the report read. "The group teaches that husbands are the heads of their wives and should take authority over the family."

According to The Times, the group describes itself as a "charismatic Christian community." The "heads and handmaids give direction on important decisions, including whom to date or marry, where to live, whether to take a job or buy a home and how to raise children."

The Right has always played both sides in most disputes. Especially when it comes to race. We need to build a wall to keep out Mexicans and dEmS aRe ThE rEaL rAcIsTs. The Democrats want to destroy the suburbs with Blacks and the Democrats keep black people on the plantation.

Keeping Illegal invaders out of our country is not Racist, it is the way to keep in check who is coming in, who has been vaccinated, who can support themselves, who are criminal!

I do not know anyone who read Dante's Divine Comedy in high school.

The focus of high school is on English literature.

Not medieval Italian literature.

Not Russian literature.

Not German or French literature.

Not Greek tragedy or drama.

College level literature classes are going to be where one read translations of foreign language literature: Dante, Dostoevsky, Goethe, Kafka.

You know who does stick their busybody noses into what children read at school?

That's right: conservative religious fundamentalists. They even complain when kids read Harry Potter at school.

Lefties ARE Catholics. The RCC is also against divorce, gay marriage, adultery and other issues but it doesn't stop people from (doing those things) or (committing those sins), depending on your point of view.

Yes there are people who claim to be RCC but are not and yes the church dies little about it.
But if you dont accept the rules, you are not on the team.

Historically, obviously, Evangelicals were very violently against Roman Catholics, as were Trumpf's intellectual ancestors of the Ku Klux Klan, but as people ceased to believe in any religion except the holy dollar, the various denominations found it possible to work together against Christian decency. This has been held up a little by the election of a Pope with some sympathy for Jesus of Nazareth, that Jewish Communist. It will soon go off, however, and the Baalites can combine in hatred of decency once more.

You must be very young. In the 60's it was required reading and a great piece used in debates between local high school debate teams. Sorry you missed it.

You went to high school in the 1960s??

There is no need to read translations of medieval Italian narrative poetry in high school. There is an enormous canon of world class English-language literature to cover in high school. That is the real reason we do not make 11th graders read English translations of Dante Alighieri's epic poem. It is not because liberals schemed to keep it out of schools.

Kids can wait until college to read translations of medieval Italian narrative poems, German romantic literature, Greek tragedy, Russian psychological dramas, French post-modernism .

Fine. Whatever. I was just letting you know that there was a time when this was more common along with real debates...with words and critical thinking
even on the strangest of subjects at evidently a younger age. No texts, no emojis, no anonymity, no fights or violence. It was wonderful.

For the record, I have taken a class on The Divine Comedy, and my understanding is that Dante was composing a political commentary using the Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradiso as metaphors for the political and historical landscape of Italy in the 13th century.

It was not a religious screed intended for 20th century American Christian fundamentalists

It is a classic of world literature, but high school kids have enough to do with surveying English language literature from the great English and American authors.

Plenty of time in college for Dante, Tolstoy, Cervantes.

Some of the "defined" areas in there were obviously meant for political persons, some ecclesiastical, a lot of Popes, etc.
Quite a mix of skullduggery. LOL!

But that's not why Republicans are pretending to want the wall. They're doing it as a dog whistle to Ethnic Nationalists.

No that is what Democrats are accusing them of, how many Illegal invaders do you have living with you, supporting them fully?

I don't support illegal immigration. I also don't support non-white immigration. Unlike you, I'm not a pussy, so I can just admit it.
