In the parish of Penmarc, which my paternal ancestors came from, Anglicised Anglican landlords and 'Welsh'-speaking Nonconformist farm workers 'got on' in just the same way - if you are in the power of bullies you'd better - but when the raiilways came our people got up as one and left as one, leaving the forelock-tugging to English and Irish immigrants. When 'black' people could get away, how many ever went back? And, of courser, Penmarc to the mining valleys was no real distance, whereas to shift into what must have seemed distant foreign countries would have seemed much more dramatic for ex-slaves. But never take enforced silence for consent, not ever.

Registered republicans make up 23% of the electorate. At least 1/3 of them are racists.
If the GOP were to purge all their racists they would make up only 15% of the electorate.
They need every racist voter they have just to remain a viable party.
After the convention this summer, we may just see such a split when Romney gets the GOP nomination and Der Donald runs under the "Trump" party .
