Okay... Why would we...

If they just had degrees.....
or traded in the stock market....
It seems that they get better fed using a different source that is far easier to access.

Or did you not read SF's post?

So, let's state it for all to read. They are getting their food from the county and city instead of the Feds and are being better fed because of it. The food stamp people get upset that the Fed dollars aren't being spent, they run ads hoping for more people to use the less efficient Federal system! Woooo!

That's how I want my tax dollars spent!

I read the whole article including the part about people feeling ashamed and the stigma attached to welfare these days. Did you?
I read the word "may" in front of that one. Do you suggest that "may" is an assurance of truth?

Later the story goes on to say people like to use the county and city programs better because they are more efficient and easier to access. It seems the Feds are being run out of town through competition.

Um in KY everyone gets the food stamps (actually credit card looking things) federal type from their county offices....

It seems that way, because you want it to seem that way. The few thousand more the county and city agencies have picked up do not make up for the ones not enrolled in the federal program, you are just assuming they do because you want to assume so.

"FRAC says enrollment in free summer lunch programs also has dropped - 30 percent in the past decade."

Hmmm.

So I'd say there is a problem in Colorado, and it is probably a mixure of stigma, and not knowing that they qualify. I think an outreach program is just the thing.

The measure of how well a welfare program is working is on how few people need it, not how many are using it.

It is not the measure of compassion to have more needy than less.

Give me a fucking break. Did you even bother to read the Rocky Mountain News article?

It said FEDERAL dollars are not being spent because....

"Counties are a safer bet when it comes to looking for food. They have more flexibility, McDonough said, and can direct people to food banks or provide vouchers for meals.

In contrast to the federal program, the city and county of Denver continues to draw more people each year to its hunger programs, said Roxane White, manager of Denver Human Services. "

"Competition between agencies could be one reason, said Leo Lesh, executive director of enterprise management at Denver Public Schools. When children and their parents come to a school for a federally funded lunch, they are allowed only to eat, then must leave so staff can clean up.

But if they go to a church, a club or a recreation center, they get the same food, but they also can participate in programs, play basketball or go swimming. "

So gee golly, those lousy clubs/rec centers and churches are feeding people, so we have to get the people back to using federal tax dollars.... let's advertise....

I don't even know what your point is. Whether is state or federal dollars, its still managed and implemented at the state and county level.

Anyway, the point of the post was WHY these outreach Ads are being run.

Which seems more likely?

-Damo's reason: That the state is offering to give away food stamps, like door prizes, to people who don't even qualify.

OR....

-Liz McDonough, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Human Services, who said people are reluctant to apply for three reasons:

• They don't think they are eligible so don't bother to apply.

• They worry they don't have the right kind of identification.

• Senior citizens are reluctant to go through all the paperwork.

I read the whole article including the part about people feeling ashamed and the stigma attached to welfare these days. Did you?

I read that was the assumption they were making. Yet in the very same article it stated that they were going to the city, county and churches to get the food instead of using the federal program. Which would lead one to believe that the "stigma" argument is pretty much bullshit.... otherwise they wouldn't be going to the city, county and churches.

Hmm maybe they are, all the illegals with no papers.....

Link? Where did I say they didn't qualify? You sir, are lying about what I said. I said, people who need it shouldn't qualify, not that they said they would give it to those who do not qualify. You are being deliberately obtuse, and directly mistating what I have said.

-Liz McDonough, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Human Services, who said people are reluctant to apply for three reasons:

She said "MAY BE" reluctant for those reasons. Or do you not read?

You may be reluctant to say, "Oops, I was wrong" (like in the other thread where you couldn't do math and implied that 2007 minus 400 is 1675 and that my "rolleyes" were therefore wrong when I stated that somebody stated earlier that peer review was going on for over 400 years.... and you then posted a timeline that said it started in 1675... I then pointed out that 2007 minus 400 is 1607 and that 1607 was before 1675 by quite a bit.... You then never returned....), or you may not. But I do know that the word "may" is not a statement of assurance or of fact.

Who is "they"? Some people have gone to the city, but you are making this leap that everyone who needs these has. And I think that's false, and I think that they experts they talked to in this article are very correct about the reaons why. Fear of paperwork on the part of seniors, the misconception that they don't qualify, and shame.

I still like her reasons better than yours.

Didn't you say they wanted to give away food stamps to people who didn't qualify?

No that is true, but you are again, assuming that more do not need it. Your state would really stand out if the amount of people getting it are the only ones who need it. A statistical anomaly. I guess that raised some suspicions as statistical anomalies will do.

No, I am reading the story and finding that the city and county run programs are outperforming the federal one.

All of the figures are based on usage. If enough people do not use it there is some "lack" automatically by such a figure.
