The "Tories" of revolutionary America were the conservatives, Ooda...just as the Tories of today are the conservatives. They were the ones telling the colonists that George III was their liege Lord...and that we ought remain part of England.

But THE REAL DANGER RIGHT NOW IN AMERICA does not come from the danger of dictatorship, even with that dictator wanna-be in office...or serious governmental overreach. It comes, rather, from the fact that a significant minority of the people want not to be governed at all. They deplore government…the single most important ingredient in civilized society.

I suspect a lot of that absurdity was started during the first inaugural address by Ronald Reagan. As chief executive, he unwisely endorsed the notion of hatred of “being governed” with his (just about always, unfortunately, quoted out of context), “…government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”

He was wrong…or at least, I sure as hell hope he was wrong, because if he was correct…democracy does not stand a chance of success. Democracy demands that government be a MAJOR FACTOR in the solution to problems…and there is no chance of democracy working if government truly is the problem.

And government requires that the people being governed...CONSENT TO BEING GOVERNED.

The Tories, Ooda...WERE THE CONSERVATIVES. They opposed change. They were the ones claiming that the colonists owed allegiance to George III. Don't re-write history.

The Americans in rebellion against England...and the King were hardly conservatives...THEY WERE RADICALS.

You know...some day I'd like to meet the guy or gal YOU actually ARE smarter than. That poor bastard (I'm hoping there's only one and not two or three) really got short-changed.

WE, the people, established the "government" and the laws. As a people (the ones who actually can think) we have to agree to give up some of the freedom we would have if we were all alone on the planet...or even, all alone on this continent. That is the way nationhood works...that is the way civilization works. In effect, we have to allow ourselves to be governed.

Anyway, as I said...WE, the people, face a LOT less danger DANGER from government...and perceived governmental excess...than we do from the nut-cases who want license...and who will accept chaos and anarchy rather than be a partner in society and nationhood.

A reasonable, civilized society requires that "WE, the people" allow ourselves to be governed. YOU obviously do not want to be part of WE, the people. YOU want to be part of the problem that confronts decent, reasonable, civilized societies.

But some people just will not give their consent...and in order for civilization to exist...it has to be extracted from them.

If they do not want to limit their speed, for instance...if they do not want to obey traffic lights and stop signs., if they do not want to pay their taxes...methods have to be put into place to force them to do so...or to pay a penalty for not doing so.
