No, it would not even come close to paying off the national debt.
We have one of the best, if not the best, healthcare systems in the world. We can certainly make it better. We can improve the FDA process on generics. We can stop renewing patents for minor tweaks. We can stop the litigious nature of our society that runs up costs and thus insurance costs as well.
How in the name of all that exists...can you possibly assert that WE "have one of the best, if not the best, healthcare systems in the world" when it is obvious by almost every metric that we, by far the richest nation on the planet, have a system that ranks us beneath almost 30 other nations?

The wealthy have had their taxes slashed over and over since Eisenhower was president. They have had many decades of contributing less and less to the government coffers. Corporations have had the same kind of breaks given. You cannot judge the impact of raising taxes back to reasonable levels for a year. The impact would accummulate over decades. We should be doing it immediately. It would be a huge help to lowering the debt.
We should also have nationalized medicine. We could cap it at 10 percent like other countries do. That would save us 8 percent every year.

CANCER.
I went to the VA...because that was where I was getting my healthcare.
They did a good job. Back when it happened...in 1996...they spoke in terms of 5 years survival.
This is 23 years later.
But the statistics I cited are accurate.
We spend MUCH more per capita on healthcare than any other country...
...and we rank nowhere near the top in results.
