What is woke about the lil mermaid?

Because she has been told that the movie is 'woke'. It isn't. It's a live remake of an animated movie. The choice for Ariel happened to be black. Therefore woke I guess. I have no idea. If you had never seen the original, you wouldn't look at this movie and claim it was woke. I hardly noticed the lyric changes. They are pretending this is about changing the lyrics. It isn't. It is entirely about the fact that a black actress was cast in the lead. She is absolutely fantastic.

The box office issues are restricted mainly to China and South Korea. Same reason. Racism. It is what it is.

In this thread some are admitting it’s due to a black actress.

There's no point in having a discussion about what's different if you haven't seen the new one.... you can look up the differences... the changes the deletions the additions... if you like the ending in the original you'll hate the new one...

I can see you do not want to share your feelings on this, gotcha.

What’s different about the ending?

Nothing even remotely significant. But you would have to see the movie instead of reading the anti-woke propaganda. In the new movie, the mermaids are a diverse group, they were all white in the original. So, yeah, I'm sure some people find that disappointing. We both know what's going on here.

Insightful post, great point about Avatar.

Avatar in my view was a barely shaded commentary about what Europeans did to the Indigenous Americans. Is that "woke", or were the Trumppers too stupid to see what they were doing?

When the first one came out in 2009, it outraged military buffs and Reichwingers even though they hadn't yet co-opted the pejorative "Woke" yet. How they ranted and raved about how it made military ppl and greedy corporations look bad. It was downright communist! It also still stands as the highest-grossing movie of all time.

Despite the poutrage from the racists about the Mermaid remake, it is doing well at the box office.

I'm sure you can give me a link... you brought it up... anyway I'm happy to see that you've recognized that this Rewritten version is woke in quite a number of ways... and just fine with it
.. in this case just pay attention to who likes the new version.. that will give you an idea of who they made the movie for... the rest of us will always have the original to enjoy...;)

The original with the white mermaid with long red hair, not the icky black one.

Do you know where the weak box office is taking place?

China and South Korea. Asians hate black people, and the haters bombed the rating sites, even though NONE of them have actually seen the movie.

Every corporation who supports the LGBTQ community does so because they believe it will help their bottom line. Apparently, white racists don't want a business to market to any other demographic, if they do, they get tarred with the 'woke' label. But this whole thing will blow over, and the corporations that stick to their guns will end up winning the day. The racists have overplayed their hand. Because they really aren't that smart.

:hand: :hand: :hand:

If Disney was *really* pandering to alleged wokieness, wouldn't they have made the new version with a black lesbian mermaid? :rofl2:

What’s different about the ending?

I saw the.movie last week and didn't notice anything radically and substantively different about the ending, or the movie in general compared to the 1990s animated version.

Girl meets boy.

Girl loses boy.

Girl wins boy back.

Sounds like possibly your panties and bra are too tight.

Maybe you should start buying your lingerie in the "big girls" section.

And yet you have no answer.

Why do you complain about strawberry icecream or movies made to a minority group of buyers by corporations who choose to try and capture that money as well, as the money they already get from the majority purchase?

Why is that a problem for you? Why do you think the world should revolve around only what you what you want to consume? And then get all offended if company ALSO decides to make stuff others want to consume, who are not you?

Your entire argument is 'me... me... me... they should only pander to me... anything else is wrong'.

Who cares who they made the movie for? Why is your ilk twisted over it?

I can hardly wait for the excuse that it has nothing to do with race. Of course it does, 100%. You're replying to a person who used to lie and claim she had a black husband so it was okay to tell vile racist jokes and post in "Ebonics." The skank has never been married to anyone, green purple black or polka-dotted.

You haven't seen it... and I'm not sure if you've seen the original so what good would it do to tell you what changes additions deletions were disappointing?

You haven't seen it either, so how is it that YOU can have an opinion about the movie based on Breitbart and Newsmax rants, and Jarod cannot?

Yep, the original is still around, and it's my favorite of the newer Disney animated movies. But there is no question that some things have changed, and the slight modifications to the lyrics in almost every case were designed to represent Ariel as an empowered female (which scares the SHIT out of the nutters) rather than a victim subject to the whims of her Prince Charming. For example, one of the songs had a line directed towards the Prince, telling him to go for it without any type of consent. So it was slightly changed. A verse was removed from a song that basically said to little girls everywhere that they didn't need their voice to land a man, just their looks. Not a great message for girls, so it was removed. And they turned Prince Eric into a more three dimensional character rather than an avatar for the knight in shining armor. Also, IMHO, a positive change. They are not losing their minds because of the lyric changes per se. They are losing their minds because a black actress is offensive to them. It's racist to the core. Plain and simple.

OMFG, they've destroyed the movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give me a fucking break. I can watch the old version on Disney Plus any time I want to.

What an outstanding post and movie contrast/comparison as well. Thank you. I can guarantee you that Toxic and pEarl and the other whackjobs here whining about the new version have not seen it. They just heard about it from the Reichwing racist talking heads who told them it was an outrageous woke pandering thing and totally completely ruined and Disney should be bankrupted and out of business so vote for DeSantis.

Again, why should Jarod not be allowed to discuss a film he hasn't seen, but YOU can?
