They think that now. Back then, they were the Libertarian Capitalists who wanted "small government." That's why they were against ending slavery, they felt it was a state issue and the federal government shouldn't get involved.

No, they thought that when they became liberal. Back then, they were conservative. They believed the rich got that way from hard work, that government should be kept small, and things like slavery and segregation were state issues.
Why do you think the pro-slavery states now all vote Republican? The regional ideas didn't change, only the parties.

idiot.....slavery had been extinct for a hundred years before the south started voting Republican........the previously demmycrat states of the south became Republican because of the way the demmycrats handled the country under Carter........remember the term "Reagan Democrats"?.......

Calm down. I know nobody likes hearing how they're wrong, but there is no need for name-calling.

Anyway, the parties switched positions during desegregation. Goldwater ran on a platform of segregation being a state issue, which attracted the Conservatives and alienated the Liberals. This is when Conservatives started voting Republican, and the Democrats started adopting more liberal policies.
