Well, if you notice, what he said in that letter involved slavery in every option listed because the war was about slavery. And ultimately what he found (and ultimately was successful in) was that freeing the slaves could save the Union, not some mixture, not just keeping the status quo, only one of those options turned out to be the one that worked.

So the secession documents are just feels (well, they kind-of were back when they were ratified) and not historical facts, which are routinely ignored and dismissed by your camp, because you know better than the men who wrote them?

True, but the main reason Lincoln invaded the South, starting the War of Northern Aggression, was to preserve the Union...just as the letter says.

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave then I would do it"

Ft Sumter was a federal fort,had ever right to stock a fort!
There was no CSA,only Southern States in rebellion.
It was Lincoln's responsibility to put down the rebellion.
