The founders said we are a democracy

You are describing The Oligarchy. It is all that is left of what was once the federal government.

Yet the Constitution is not dead. Indeed, people are already rising up against The Oligarchy, though the fake news suppresses it.

A day late and a dollar short.

It says so much about the GOP in '23 that we now have spirited debates about the fact that we're a democracy. Reagan would have been like, "huh?"

That party has gone WAY down the rabbit hole.

its amazing how modernists spend so much time arguing about the power of words......are we a Democracy......are we a Republic......everyone knows how our government works, regardless of what you want to name it........if you don't like the way it works you can always change it.....at least if enough of you want to....

We have to define democracy and compare that to the U. S. to determine if we meet that definition. The problem is the definition usually give, "government by the people" is so broad that it has no meaning.

What are the characteristics of a democracy to qualify? If one characteristic is individual freedom of speech. What if the people don't want free speech? Do we follow the will of the people or keep free speech despite their opposition?

Right wingers make a fetish of free speech. I think the concept is fairly trivial.
