US 'no longer technology king'

I looked up the global 500 and got tired of paging down for any pharma or techs other than IBM. THey are not there.
Oil, auto's, banks, and insurance dominate the top ranks.

USC, spinner has no debt $1MM in assets.

Though I am about to sell 50,000 and take on a 200,000 mortg.

You should try cnbc instead of the trash you are watching and you wouldn't call it gaming.
It is basically gaming, if I buy stock from one person I am investing nothing in the corporation that origionally sold the stock, we are just trading "baseball cards" based on how well we think the player is doing.

No car payments or CC debt spin ? good for you. Ilaso have currently only spend 25% of my monthly income on monthly expenses. ;)

I am doing great and I am glad you do too. Of course a market crash / slump will not effect me as much as it will you.

For those with an open mind on this subject.... the numbers I am about to use come from the two sites above....

As a percentage of GDP... the top countries of R&D spending are as follows....

1) Toga 8.4%
2) Sweden 3.8%
3) Israel 3.7%
4) Japan 2.8%
5) S Korea 2.7%
6) Switzerland 2.6%
7) USA 2.5%
8) Germany 2.3%
9) France 2.2%

Total GDP for those countries.....

1) Toga 8.68b
2) Sweden 255.4b
3) Israel 129b
4) Japan 3,745b
5) S Korea 925b
6) Switzerland 251.9b
7) USA 11,750b
8) Germany 2,362b
9) France 1,737b

Now let's run these numbers in terms of actual spending in dollars....

1) USA 293.75b
2) Japan 104.86b
3) Germany 54.33b
4) France 38.21b
5) S Korea 24.98b
6) Sweden 9.7b
7) Switzerland 6.55b
8) Israel 4.77b
9) Togo .73b

Other notables.... India 19.91b; UK 32.07b; Russia 15.49b; China 7.26b

Add the top ten after the US and you get ..... 313.37b compared to the US spending of 293.75b.

So the top ten competitors COMBINED are outpacing the US spending by 20b.

Just how is it that we are falling behind?

France, Germany, Russia, China, India, UK all spend LESS in actual dollars and percentage of GDP.

Japan spends a slightly higher percentage of GDP than the US, but about a third of our overall spending in dollar terms.

So please, for those of you not blinded by what the politicians are telling you to think, please show me how our "lack of spending" or "decline in spending" is hurting us relative to the competition.

UI find it interesting that in the first list you provide % of GDP we are thae same standing as in the opening post of this thread. You can play with statistics till you get what you want to....

that is for 1990-2000, got anything more current ?

We were probably number one then...

Yes, but does the percentage of GDP really tell the true story US? Do you believe that Togo is number one? Or do you really believe that our R&D spending has decreased so much that Japan has caught us in dollars spent?

Because dollars spent on R&D is the most important stat. If I spend $300 Billion to your $1 billion, does it matter if your percentage is higher? No it does not. What matters is that I have $299b more than you investing into R&D.

Also... YOUR initial post mentioned that the numbers are coming UP under Bush... not down.

Those R & D numbers at your link say that they are from the most recent year available "1999 - 2000".

That info is seven years old.

No, if you honestly think they have changed that much, YOU provide some numbers to show that. $100 bucks if you show me that the US is not number one in spending in terms of dollars spent. All you have to do is show me ONE country that spends more in terms of dollars. Bet you cannot do so.

but super the point is that it is pretty much the USA against the world in innovation and trade.....
all of them are out to get a piece of our pie. and US based corps have been eager to give it to them for short term profits.

I personally cannot find any info whatsoever after the year 2000.

hmm wonder why ?

I don't know. All I know is I googled it several times, several different ways, and no info after 2000 is easily available. I would imagine if someone wanted to go to a government website and start doing some real digging, you could unearth the numbers. But I'm not that motivated.

some seem to think I am seeing this decline in our R&D as a partisan thing, I think it has been dropping for some time.....
perhaps if I have time I will research backwards from 2000.

LG or Sony for tech.

Not sure on the pharma companies, but most seem to be foreign controlled.
Glaxo, Bayer ? not sure.

so what foreign tech and pharma companies would you guys put above our top 3 in each?

Well I don't know Top...you made the conflicting claims that the Forbes Global 500 was "filled" with US tech and pharma companies, and that you were looking at the 500 list, but "they aren't there".

So I'm still confused over that.

Look at this usc, now he's begging us for stock tips!

Didn't I tell ya?

LOL, I am not sure he will rate them the same way I am.
I don't buy stocks in the biggies anyway, gains are too sluggish percentage wise.

I was posting for the innovation angle and market share.
