He joined back in the early 1950's when he was young and had first entered politics, on the suggestion of an older, experienced politician who told him that if he wanted to get anywhere in politics in the south, being a Klan member was a necessity. He joined, was a member for a very short time, didn't like what he saw, then resigned his membership and denounced them.

The rest of his career was spent working to to improve the lives of the poor of all races in his state, which is why he was so loved and revered by the people, including black people.

I didn't say he was in the Klan until the 2000s. I said Democrats elected someone a leading figure of the Klan into the 2000s.

Does working for black people include Byrd's leading the filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, something Democrats claim was a landmark achievement in the effort to help blacks?

Byrd wasn't just the average member of the Klan. He recruited and held a position of leadership. Long term effects of those actions don't go away when someone leaves.
