Deuterium is a heavy isotope of hydrogen which is relatively common in seawater, and very useful in fusion. In theory, the amount of energy from deuterium in seawater is hundreds of times the energy in the same amount of gasoline.
Fusion is complex, but we keep seeing that it can work. There is a high probability we will power much of our future on deuterium from seawater.
For those wondering what the deuterium is doing in the seawater, some of the protium(the simple hydrogen) was bumped up in mass by the suns energy over the last billion or so years.
