Americans are a stupid people - Statistics, Studies and Research

Not really, since my son, for example, didn't have to learn how to use a slide rule or do logarithms from tabular values nor mechanical drafting as I did in HS, and in college won't be spending hours key-punching to load the school's main frame computer, or wasting time looking through dusty technical periodicals only to find the one volume needed has been misplaced.

Learning to use a slide rule, do logarithms from tabular values and mechanical drafting is not knowledge as much as it is learning to use obsolete tools.

The computer has replaced all of those items.

Learning to key-punch data into a computer is as necessary to running a computer as learning to rebuild a car engine is to knowing how to drive.

You are proving my point.

I have read BAC extensively.

The bottom line is being right is more to him than actually being right.

Clarity is more important to me.

It is more important to be clear than it is to be "patriotic" or accepted.

I've heard the same noise of accepted ignorance all my life, and I've rejected it all my life. Whether it's civil rights, Vietnam, "free market", Iraq, police brutality, Bush, the environment, and a whole host of serious issues, there is always the noise of ignorance .. always those looking to appear more patriotic and accepted than to stand on truth.

I have no illusions that many here have any concept whatsofuckingever about what I'm talking about. But just as it didn't matter then, it doesn't matter now.

I've heard this noise before.

Yet, in typical American fashion .. no science .. just Southpark.

You make my case.

... thank you

Tell me you didn't believe Saddam had WMD.

Of course you did. :0)

You can call me a retard anytime you choose.

LOL... you are a stubborn idiot, I'll give you that. Clinging to your fairy tale, while mocking others for their ignorance of science. The science has been displayed. Your refusing to look at it doesn't change the fact that you are flat out 100% wrong in suggesting that Science is against the collapse due to the impact of the planes and the subsequent fires.

But I know... you will again ignore it.... just as stooges tend to do with facts.

The healthcare debate makes America the laughing stock of the world and it once again clearly demonstrates that America is a stupid country full of morons.

Are Americans Stupid - Statistics, Studies and Research

[The] USA scores the lowest in national average IQ among the developed countries of the world, at a national average score of 98. The data is obtained from IQ and Global Equality by Dr. Richard Lynn (professor of Psychology, University of Ulster, Northern Ireland) and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen (University of Tampere, Finland) who have done extensive research on the subject spanning several years. The national average IQ score of Americans at 98 is below 22 countries (including Switzerland, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, North Korea and China). The low Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score of United States puts the Americans at a lower intelligence level on an average as compared to the other industralized nations.

The mathematical skills and abilities to process mathematical problems put America on a weak spot. American high school students scored 483 in the test Program for International Student Assessment. The average scores of American students were way below those of top scoring countries like South Korea, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, etc. all of whom scored between 503 and 544 (significantly higher than US scores). Mathematical skills, scientific temper and the ability to apply mathematical knowledge are essential in the present world and they are the roots of logical and scientific reasoning. If this becomes a weak point, a person’s ability to fare well in science, logical and anaytical thinking would suffer as well.

Another study as a special report by ABC showed that in scientific and mathematical skills, an average Belgian kid scored better than a skilled American. By age fifteen Americans fell behind 25 countries in this test. They scored worse than countries which spend much less in education. The report also states that in US, mediocrity is encouraged by monopoly of public school and opportunity based scholarships, which is hurting the academic ability of Americans when compared to the rest of the world. Yes, monopoly hurts because there is no competition to better oneself against, but when it comes to countries with lesser quality of education it says something. Those countries are not well off either but in spite of that they do better than US.

“American adults in general do not understand what molecules are (other than that they are really small). Fewer than a third can identify DNA as a key to heredity. Only about 10 percent know what radiation is. One adult American in five thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth, an idea science had abandoned by the 17th century.” This is an excerpt from an article by New York Times which did a study and survey of Americans to determine their awareness. Coming from a nation where half the schools do not teach the science of evolution, scientific outlook is discouraged and a lot of emphasis is laid on religious education, the results are hardly surprising.

It's no surprise why Americans can be trained to act against their own best interests.
LOL You need to get out more often BAC. I didn't need an academic study to prove that point! LOL

Yet even after reading his own article.... BAC posts...'maybe we should increase funding'....

You said it ....there is no freekin' doubt you and yours have brought down the national average IQ in this country....personally, I doubt its even as high as 98...

True, true, true, true, true....easily provable by asking anyone, on any street, in any inner city....

My grandfather was born in 1904 and graduated from the 8th grade before he went to work full time. He could recite Longfellow by memory in a booming voice that inspired me as a kid, had a vocabulary that you don't see in college kids today, and could do long division in his head. *shrug*
My great, great, great Uncle was hanged for stealing a horse.

nothing personal BAC, i like ya quite a lot

I just think you're a wackjob O_O

I like you too .. but I've been right about too many things to worry about what people think. Some things are just TOO obvious.

Life has been a great teacher.

Specialists have concluded there are many types of intelligence, there is one kind of intelligence which expresses itself symptomatically as being completely shit-ass dumb.

Make sure to say thank you to our wonderful public school system who believes that teaching to the lowest common denominator is a good idea. Cause we certainly don't want any kids to feel bad.
And where do the parents fit in in all of this? Ya know I was told it takes a village to raise a child but what happens when all the flowers of that village are a bunch of blooming idiots?

This is really a nonpartisan issue. Do ya'll have any idea how hostile our culture is towards those with higher educations, particularly those with science back grounds? They love the products of our minds and hands but hold us in contempt as people.

All through my academic carreer I was discouraged from just about everyone. Peers, adults, educators, my elders, in pursuing my passion for science. I was called every thing in the book, nerd, geek, Mr. Know it all, Webster, Poindextor, etc, etc. The only consistant approval I received for my passion was from my parents.

If we produce a bunch of dimwitted scientifically illiterate morons in our society it is because our society does not value people with scientific skills. Look at the morons we hold up to our kids as role models. Brittney Spears? Barrry Bonds? Hanna Montana? Give me a break! When I was an adolescent my heros were Armstrong and Feinman. I bet 99 out of 100 9th graders today have no idea who either one is. (My guess is that they would think Armstrong is a cyclist and Feinman a comedian, certainly not an astronaut or a physicist.).

This isn't political it's cultural. America just does not value those people who are learned in science. When I've traveled abroad I have been held in high esteem as a man of letters with a graduate education in science, particularly in Asia. Here in the US. I'm just a fuckin geek. And in the contempt for which people of science are held in this nation, the left and right are equally as bad.

If we want more scientifically literate children we need to start out by valuing the scientifically literate people we all ready have and until we start doing that, we'll remain a nation of dummies.
