Sick of the GOP

Does applauding a continuation of the fight give you any expectation of an actual discussion of the topic? Or is it just more exciting that way?

You need to get off your high horse. I'm applauding his passion because I share it. I'm not of the belief that those capable of oppressing others for monetary or political gain, and those who defend it for political or monetary gain, can be injected with a conscience because someone's politely disagreeing with them rather than rightly reviling what is despicable about their ideology. It isn't about what is 'exciting'. For an example, I'm frankly sick to death of the pc notion that racism is now accepted as part of the GOP platform and that the opposition, the media and those of us discussing it here need to treat it as if it's legitimate; it isn't. It deserves the scorn it gets here, as does the gay hate, the war on women and the disenfranchisment of the poor. What you're seeing is the result of years of trying to 'work with' such abominable ideas and accomplishing nothing.

I am not on a high horse. I am trying to bring a little civility to this forum. I am sick to death of all that you mentioned too. But calling people names and spreading hatred on this web site is not going to change that at all.

Be pissed. Be passionate. But why not be civil at the same time? Why not let the opposition be the only ones to resort to the hostilities and bullshit? It won't hurt you and it will certainly show who is the better person.

I demonstrate a mix of all of the above. Forums such as this are the perfect place for it, and this one's the best yet. I learn a lot more here about how people really feel about this stuff, on all sides, than I do in RL discussions where decorum prevents the kind of candor we see in here. It serves a purpose, a good one. Take the good with the bad, WB.

IMO, once the name-calling and the rest starts, the actual discussion is all but finished. Once we cross the line into such hostility, why stop? Why not go full out and talk about doing vile things with the poster's children, or raping the other poster or other equally disgusting things? Once you have destroyed civil discourse, why stop?

There have been plenty of great people who have abandoned these forum because of this hostility. What is left is nothing but the hardcores of both side and the trolls.

Welcome to the medium of unmoderated political discussion forums.

What you want is moderation. There are plenty of them in existence. I'm glad JPP isn't one of them.

No, moderation is not what I want.

What I want is posters who are capable of a civil, intelligent exchange of ideas and beliefs without the warfare.

I don't need Damo, Grind or Billy to tell me what is acceptable and what is not. And I certainly don't need them to require me to have a discussion that doesn't devolve into a flame war.

If we are all adults, why do we need to resort to childishness in our discussions and debates?

Not all hostility and vitriol equates to childishness. And not all heated, vitriolic exchanges deteriorate into unbridled flame wars involving vile comments about posters' children. However, in the current climate and deeply-divisive circumstances in which we find ourselves, even the most civilized among us who are fed up with the futility of seeking solutions with bigots and misogynists are going to cut loose from time to time here. Most of us here are conscious adults who employ self-moderation - walking away, using ignore, etc. - when it's too much. In my view, it appears to be working well here. The worst disruptors are but a fraction of the whole.

I want to interject here to the hijacking ;) of this thread. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the discourse between Bijou and Winterborn on this thread so far. I'll be the first to say that when the back and forth name calling goes on I quit reading. I have been doing that since before this website's existence. I enjoy talking politics and I enjoy learning other folks' opinions, even if they are vastly different from mine sometimes. The personal attacks/name calling I do skim over looking for the real contributors to the conversation.

As much as you are in favor of the hostility, it would be hard to believe you don't enjoy it.

I am trying to tone things down a bit and keep us focused on the topics rather than the hostilities.

I see I have failed in that respect. Carry on your name-calling. It seems very important to you.

I hear ya, it gets old sometimes (unless I am one of the participants, LOL), but it's an unavoidable consequence in this medium and format. I love my scrollbar for that reason. ;)

That is pretty much what I did. But now it is getting harder and harder to find the real contributions. It become page after page after page of this bullshit.

I do enjoy the hostility at times. It is quite cathartic to vent how despicable racism is to an actual racist. It's usually not practical or wise to do so in real life

I wholeheartedly disagree that it is an unavoidable consequence. If one side did not participate in the hostility, I think it would fade out greatly.

And we would become an echo chamber where politesse dictates the depths of discussion. Been there, done that. Props to Damo et al for eschewing that.

Yeah, and I think we have that to a fair degree here already.

actually I disagree, it has become far more hostile of late. I myself have certainly partaken in far more such exchanges. So I will choose to begin with myself and try to correct my actions, no matter how much certain morons deserve to be hammered :)

WB I feel you can be hostile without talking about raping someone's children (for fuck's sake, I guess I have missed some stuff and I am thankful!).

I feel you are conflating a few things. To me, and this is just my opinion, I enjoy a little hostility! I will tell you some days when I am really stressed, I enjoy coming on here and calling yurt a whiny little shit, or SF a big asshole. It's fun! And I don't mind when people call me names.

ANY implication of violence is crossing a line. IMO, rape comments, sexually degrading comments, racist shit, all that kind of stuff, is crossing the line. I always thought we could use some condemnation of that kind of stuff. I mean, there's other stuff. For instance, I don't' know about you but i personally have never bragged about fucking another poster's mother! And you can be nice. You know, if you're nice most people, but not all, wil be nice to you. I'm always nice to you! But I'm not always nice to everyone.

Also, and to me this is important. Politics are a passionate subject. We are talking in many cases about things that have very real implications. Whether or not I have access to abortion. Whether or not poor women have access to birth control. Whether seniors should have a full safety net. Whether or not poor children have a right to food. These and so many more are all passionate subjects. People should NOT be nice about them all of the time because that privileges manners over people. Manners aren't that important. People are.

To me, it is like the infamous definition of pornography - I know it when I see it. Come on we all know when something is way over the line. I am fully on board with that shit stopping. But I'm not on board for a Miss Manners contest. The most important thing to me is not agreeing with others, and if you can't after two tries walking away with "we shall have to agree to disagree then my fine chap".
