## The Official Madmen Thread ##

I've just now gotten caught up. I don't have cable, so I have to download the torrents. It's interesting that what I predicted would be the story line for some young aspiring black artist, was pretty much the exact story line they used for the Jew. There was an episode early on, with a well-to-do black gay guy giving a party... never figured out who he was, or why they had to make him a homosexual in order to be black and successful... it seemed kind of odd. I guess we are supposed to accept that this is how things were, if you were gay and black, there wasn't any prejudice, people just gathered at your house for parties and such? Blacks in the actual advertising biz, are still relegated to the secretarial pool....they are just now allowing Jews in creative.

I loved it that the Jaguar wouldn't start for Lane. It's not often you chuckle during a suicide scene, but that made me LOL. You know Jaguar has got to LOVE the constant references to how shitty their cars are, and that twist was just apropos.... what are the odds of a brand new XK7 not starting? Hated to see Lane depart this way, but he always seemed to be the character that didn't fit the show, and I felt that way from the first time he appeared. In that respect, I suppose it was fitting and proper.

I don't know how I feel about Joan now. Going back to what I said before I watched this season, it is somewhat offensive how they portray these women who seemingly have only one thing going for them, which manages to get them everything they want in the end. Couldn't it have been just as plausible that Joan's immeasurable office management skill was realized as things became a clusterfuck in her absence? It was as if, they couldn't make her a "jr. partner" unless she slept her way into the position. Again, more of the liberal stereotyping. Then there is what they did with the Peggy character.... it makes no sense, women were willing to hop in bed and prostitute themselves, that was fine... but to have money thrown in your face? Pft! Forget that! I'm taking a job for $19k a year instead of your measly $18k! Way to show the boys, Peg! I mean, I guess I was expecting the guy who interviewed her to want some favor in return, that's usually how that worked, right? Peggy was a woman, and merely a sex object not appreciated for her brain, right? That's clearly the stereotype, but they veered away from it... nooo... Peggy is a brilliant copywriter who is worthy of $19k a year. LMAO.

I like that the Sally character is more robust in the script, I think there is a whole TV series there, in the perspectives of a child growing up in that environment. I have always gotten a 'creepy' feeling about her BF, Glen, though. There's just something not right about him. Anyone else?

:what:

glen's always been creepy. that's how he is.

I don't really agree on pretty much anything else you said, and didn't understand the first paragraph at all O_o

Mad Men is not a good barometer of average middle class America in the 60s. It is full of stereotypes, in fact, almost the entire premise of the show, is based in a series of stereotypes. This is done intentionally, to be "evocative" and appeal to the masses, and it works. We are entertained by it. This doesn't mean it was a true depiction of life in the 60s, by any stretch. I am a big fan of the show, but I am a romanticist for the 60s, I fell in love with the movie Goodfellas, because of that black '65 Impala Henry leans on... which was supposed to be outside "Idlewild Airport in 1963" according to the film... it didn't matter to me, I liked the look of that car and the feel of that movie's portrayal of the 60s. It wasn't realistic, it was exaggerated, but I didn't care because I was entertained by it. The same applies to MadMen, I can appreciate it for the look and feel, how it flows and the story lines, even through all the painful liberal stereotypes, I am still entertained by it.

One thing I am interested in seeing how they deal with this season, is the effects of Civil Rights, as most of the anti-discrimination laws had been established by the year they are supposed to be in, and if the show stays true to its 'stereotypical' form, we should see a new young black 'executive' (or maybe an 'artist') emerge, and then Roger and Don will have to be portrayed as the bigots who made a fortune off of his ideas or talent, while dangling carrots that he would simply never get. You can almost see that coming. The proverbial "token" as it were.

I posted this BEFORE ever watching the first episode of this season. Does this clarify my first paragraph better?

I guess my point is, we are now seeing more black faces on Mad Men than ever before... but look at how they have stereotyped them all? There's Don's secretary, Dawn... poor black girl who has to sleep in the broom closet... steppin and fetchin for the big Don, who graciously accepted her as his secretary. Never mind that Don's taste in secretaries, after some hard-learned lessons, is for women he has absolutely no attraction to, and who don't threaten the current woman in his life. Then, as I mentioned, the mysterious gay wealthy black guy... do you know who he is, or what he does? He just kind of popped up as host of some big party in Manhattan, where all the rich white folk didn't seem to notice he was black or gay? This is supposed to just be accepted and not questioned by the viewer, I suppose? That's the two examples we have so far, I can't wait for the next liberal stereotype to roll out...

You should start a Mad Men review blog because this sort of analysis has really been missing from everything I've read. If you do can you post a link here?

Has anybody been watching Girls? Not girl-watching, watching Girls on HBO? I am trying to figure that show out. When I was in my 20's men were not that repulsive and weird. Is this a realistic view? If so, I would have to say the wide dissemination of porn via the internet has in fact changed people's sexual behavior. Or is it a bunch of BS? There's no way for me to know because I am not around 20 somethings and certainly not in that manner. If that's real, I am more grateful than ever to be Gen X Baby!

The amazing part of the show is that I thought that Zosia Mamet was a terrible actress from seeing her on Mad Men It ends up she kinda shines in this show. And maybe it's the presence of Lena Dumham but she looks good too. I cracked up during the scene where she is trying to lose her virginity and the guy goes down on her and her whole face is like "errrrrrr". That was pretty much the only scene so far that has made me laugh though. The rest of it is too weird for me. I guess I am getting old but that's okay I am still having way more fun than these girls appear to be!

i dont know what you are referring to about the creepy guys. want to elaborate? I doubt internet has changed anything. before internet porn, there was vhs, before that, porn mags, before that, cave drawings.

I can't really elaborate, have you been watching it? In order to elaborate I would have to write some really dirty stuff.

I loved this season.

Pete Campbell never wins a fight. People just punch him out wherever he goes. Awesome.

I hate Megan, period. Betty is actually more complex than her. I keep wanting to say shut the fuck up Megan every time she opens her mouth. They should marry her to Pete.

Don and Peggy at the movies, what, no handjob?

Yeah Peggy is not off the show and she will become very powerful. Joan appears powerful right now but I wonder if it will last?

I loved it, too. However, I was hoping Megan would put Don's psyche and male ego through a meat grinder, but it appears he's got the upper hand again, now that he fixed that commercial for her.

Yes, it's always a beautiful thing to see Pete Campbell get his ass handed to him. Here he thought the guy's wife saw him as 'special' - poor gal's just mentally ill and gives it up to 'any old schmuck'. Ha!

And I'm sorry, but Roger Sterling is just a clown at this point. I hope next season he grows his hair 'long' and starts saying 'groovy', etc. He's a walking mid-life crisis and Weiner could have a ball with that.

Yeah she's too weak to do that. I actually think Betty gave him more of a challenge. LOL @ Pete, I know.

god I always feel sorry for pete campell. he's such a complicated character. I don't know why everyone hates on him.

bijou why are you saying don got the upperhand that she's in the commercial? don didn't want her in the commercial at first. Don wanted her home, not to have her career advance. At least that's the way I interpreted it.

Yeah I think I am right on the megan thing, it's a good thing for her:

Inside the episode: http://www.amctv.com/mad-men/videos/inside-episode-513-mad-men-the-phantom

Matthew Weiner: "[don] realizes if he gives megan what she wants, she could possibly leave him" / "story of sacrifice"

Jon Hamm: "don realizes megan has a talent, could be successful, sees something in her"

Actress that plays megan: "it's a wonderful ending for megan"

I get that "helping her" means she could become successful and leave him. He states this to Peggy. That's obvious. But he realized she has talent from watching that clip? Really? Talent at what? Because she acted no scenes and spoke no words. She's photogenic. He didn't already know that?

Oh yeah I saw her picture and realized she's so talented she could change the world. Oh, okay.

I guess it's funny when women look for actual meaning only to realize that there is no meaning because we're talking about a man's mind. Another lesson learned.

Don didn't want her home IMO, he wanted his idea of a partnership with her at his office. Though she did ask him to make her a copywriter so originally that wasn't his idea it was hers. He enjoyed it though. Then she said, no make me a star! I don't wanna be a copywriter anymore it's hard and stuff. So then he made her a star and went off to get laid and now we'll have to hear about what a dirtbag he is but I would have went off and gotten laid too.

As far as Pete goes - I love watching him get punched! And Grind he's not all that complex. YOu talk like a someone who has never taken the 5:13 commuter train out of Penn. You wanna meet Pete? Just hop on. There's 200 Pete's on any given night. And that's just since they banned the bar car. Used to be 400!
